major U.S. city.

I'd have confidently answered "Detroit," without using lifelines, and gone home. Yet another "false memory."
But I notice most of the audience was with me, too. Wonder if this is another Sinbad-Shaquille-Shazam-Kazaam moment?

"Plain Dealer" seems like a huge clue. I can't imagine the
Cleveland
newspaper calling any of the other cities that.
