Fire up the toaster!

#1 Post by Bob78164 » Fri Sep 08, 2017 8:36 pm

Washington beat the Phillies, handing them their 88th loss of the season, so Philadelphia cannot win more than 74 games. The Nationals have won 87 games so Philadelphia cannot win the National League Eastern Division. The Dodgers, Arizona, and Colorado all have won at least 75 games so Philadelphia will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

No Rocky story this year. The Phillies have been toastified. --Bob

San Francisco has lost 87 games so the Giants cannot win more than 75 games. The Dodgers have won 92 games so the Giants cannot win the National League Western Division. Arizona has won 82 games and Colorado's win over Los Angeles was the Rockies' 76th win of the season, so San Francisco will finish behind at least three teams in the National League Western Division.

It's time to Say Hey to next season. The Giants have been toastified. --Bob

I was thinking about this 2 days ago. Is this the earliest you've had the toaster plugged in?

It's actually one of the latest dates (Thanks to the mediocrity in the wild card races)....

2011 had the earliest toaster appearance....

How could I forget the Disatros? A little different this year. But will anyone beat the Indians again?

:(

I happened to listen to the top of the third inning of Friday's game. What a clusterfuck! It starts with a walk. Then the second baseman screws up an easy double play and two Nationals are on base. A groundout that should have been a double play, and another walk to load the bases. Then Michael Taylor lines the ball over the center fielder's head for an inside the park grand slam! I turn off the radio in disgust.

Inside the park grand slams are rare. The Phillies' Aaron Altherr hit one in Nationals Park in 2015.

Because of the debacle in the third, the Phillies lost despite hitting three 3-run homers themselves, and are the first team to be toasted, by a few hours.

Kansas City beat the White Sox today, handing Chicago its 87th loss of the season so the White Sox cannot win more than 75 games. Cleveland has won 88 games so the White Sox cannot win the American League Central Division. Boston and the Yankees each have already won at least 78 games so Chicago will finish behind at least two teams in the American League Eastern Division. Houston has won 86 games so Chicago will finish behind Houston. In addition, the Angels have won 73 games, Texas has won 72 games, and Seattle has won 71 games for a total of 216 wins among those three teams. In addition, Texas has six games remaining against Seattle and Texas and Seattle each have three games remaining against the Angels. Thus, there will be a total of at least 228 wins among Los Angeles of Anaheim, the Rangers, and the Mariners, so at least one of those teams will finish with at least 76 wins. The White Sox will therefore finish behind at least two teams in the American League Western Division.

The South Side of Chicago truly is the baddest part of town. The White Sox have been toastified. --Bob

Cincinnati has lost 83 games so the Reds cannot win more than 79. The Cubs have won 78 games, and St. Louis and Milwaukee have won 76 games each, for a total of 230 wins. In addition, Chicago has 7 games remaining against the Cardinals and 4 games against the Brewers, and the Cardinals and Brewers have 3 games left against each other. That means the three teams have to reach a total of at least 244 wins, so at least one of those teams will win at least 82 games. In short, Cincinnati cannot win the National League Central Division. The Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Rockies all have won at least 80 games so the Reds also will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

No Red Scare this year. Cincinnati has been toastified. --Bob

Detroit's loss today was the Tigers' 86th loss of the season so they cannot win more than 76 games. Cleveland has already won 90 games, so the Tigers cannot win the American League Central Division. Boston and New York each have won at least 79 games so Detroit will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the American League Eastern Division. Houston as won 86 games so Detroit will finish behind the Astros. Also, the Angels have won 74 games, Seattle has won 73 games, and Texas has won 72 games for a total of 219 wins among those three teams. In addition, Texas has four games remaining against Seattle and Seattle and Texas each have three games remaining against the Angels. Thus, there will be a total of at least 229 wins among Los Angeles of Anaheim, the Rangers, and the Mariners, so at least one of those teams will finish with at least 77 wins. The Tigers will therefore finish behind at least one non-division winner in the American League Western Division.

Time to motor on to next season. Detroit has been toastified. --Bob

The Mets (and their fans) suffered their 83rd loss of the season so they cannot win more than 79 games. Washington has won 89 games so the Mets cannot win the National League Eastern Division. The Dodgers, Arizona, and Colorado all have won at least 80 games so New York will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

They won't make it three playoff seasons in a row for the first time in their history. The New York Mets have been toastified. --Bob

That's exactly what Bob said. The Mets have never made the playoffs in three consecutive years. Come to think of it, last year was only the second time in the team's history that they made the playoffs in back-to-back years... and the first time wasn't even that long ago. Just go back to the year of the famous "Subway Series".

No, it's not. I know what he meant to say, but he didn't phrase it well. His statement, "They won't make it three playoff seasons in a row for the first time in their history" is equivalent to "For the first time in their history, they won't make it three playoff seasons in a row," which is clearly not true.

San Diego lost to Colorado for the Padres' 82nd loss of the season, so they cannot win more than 80 games. The Los Angeles Dodgers of Los Angeles have already won 95 games, so the Padres cannot win the National League Western Division. Arizona has won 85 games and the Colorado's win over San Diego gave the Rockies 81 wins, so the Padres will finish behind at least three teams in the West.

Time for Padres fans to run for the border. San Diego has been toastified. --Bob

It could perhaps have been clearer, but in standard written English (and statutory interpretation), the modifier is generally applied to the phrase it's adjacent to. In this case, "for the first time in their history" modifies "make it to three playoff seasons in a row." --Bob

You left out "won't" from the beginning of the modified phrase. That makes all the difference.

Pittsburgh has lost 81 games so far this season so the Pirates cannot win more than 81 games. The Cubs have won 82 games so the Pirates cannot win the National League Central Division. The Dodgers, Arizona, and the Rockies all have won at least 82 games, so Pittsburgh also will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

The Pirates are not yet guaranteed to have a losing season, but they won't be playing into October. Pittsburgh has been toastified. --Bob
