Georgia Tech beat Penn 41-0 in the game that essentially clinched the national championship for Tech, the first time a team outside the northeast won a national title. This was the year after Tech had beaten Cumberland 222-0. The game was scheduled because Penn (which had never played a game south of Virginia before) had an opening on its schedule when Army dropped football following the U.S. entry into World War I. It helped the scheduling that Tech's Coach John Heisman was a Penn alumnus. Later, when a 10-0 Pitt team barely beat Penn, national sportswriters were convinced that Tech was the best team in the country. There was no AP poll at the time, but both the New York Times and New York Sun declared Tech the national champion after the season was over.
