RIP Cariann Hithon and Officer Floyd East Jr.

In Miami Beach, Temple student Cariann Hithon drove her BMW into a crowd of people and struck and injured a policeman. Another cop shot and killed Hithon.

Meanwhile in Lubbock, Texas Tech student Hollis Daniels, who was in police custody for drug possession, pulled out a gun and killed University Police Officer Floyd East Jr.

It's unusual for college students to attack police. Two incidents in one day is bizarre.

Cariann Hithon was a black woman. I don't know the race of the cop that shot her. Unfortunately the situation (driver told to stop and get out of the car restarts the car and proceeds to assault an officer by running into or over him and driver is shot by other officers on the scene) won't matter because she was black. There will be protests. Her life mattered. Not the cop she ran over. I doubt she intentionally ran him over as it seems she was drunk and probably panicked. We'll never know. But the cops at the time had no way of knowing why but had to protect themselves and the public. An unfortunate situation on both sides.

Moral: Don't drink and drive. Your life matters.

The shooting incident is being investigated by Miami-Dade police (apparently a separate agency from the Miami Beach Police Department) to confirm that the shooting was within policy. It seems reasonable to me for an independent agency to conduct an investigation to confirm that a fatal shooting was in fact within policy.

Under the circumstances, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the race of the driver was unknown to the officer when he fired. --Bob

If Hithon did what all witnesses appear to agree that she did, she will not be resting in peace in Heaven.

This was not a first-time incident for her. She knew better.

She already got the death penalty for her crimes. Give her a break.
