Liz Farley
Sunnyside, CA

Liz is known as "the otter lady". She's going for $250,000 with no lifelines remaining.

$250,000: While the nations are neighbors, which of these countries' capitals lie the farthest apart, with over 2000 miles separating them?
A - Norway and Russia
B - Mexico and the United States
C - Brazil and Colombia
D - India and Pakistan

Liz can't come up with an answer so she decides to walk away with $100,000.
[Reveal] Spoiler:

Not B or D and would gamble on C.

How do you confidently rule out "B - Mexico and the United States," yet consider "A - Norway and Russia?"

On a Mercator map A, B & C are about the same.

OK, but Mercator projections, by design, distort distances. Since the actual distances are A = 1,021 miles, B = 1,883 miles and C = 2,277 miles, I was wondering why 2 people confidently ruled out B, but still considered A, which is about half the distance represented by B.

Estonut:

I know exactly where DC is & approximately where Mexico City is. I've driven cross-country in the US, though never into Mexico further than just across the border. But I could deduce how much farther Mexico City was.

I didn't have this kind of info on Oslo & Moscow.

Call me a map geek. I have a pretty good ability to visualize a map or globe in my head.

Well, except for the distance between Norway and Russia...
