A dear friend lives in Colorado but teaches at the Aztec high school where a shooter came in and blasted away last Thursday. He'd been planning it for months, according to law enforcement. He dressed like a student, concealed the firearms in his clothes, and walked in to a bathroom where he unpacked all the weaponry. A very unlucky student got a hall pass to the bathroom and paid for it with his life. Even unluckier, a teacher heard the shots and sent a student to what he thought would be a safer location, but she crossed paths with the shooter. The teacher is distraught, and Chris doesn't know if he'll return to the classroom.

The shooter had previously been investigated by the FBI for online comments about planning a mass shooting. After he shot the second student, he started down the hall and fired into unlocked classrooms. My everlasting appreciation goes out to Thomas Hill, a custodian who ran down the halls yelling "Active shooter! Lockdown!" Thanks to Hill, teachers locked their doors and huddled the students into corners and closets. Chris does not have an 8 a.m. class, so she locked her door and huddled in the corner by herself. She heard three shots, but there were many more than that. Law enforcement was on scene immediately, less than two minutes. Apparently the shooter turned a weapon on himself as soon as he realized officers were there, but I don't know how long that took. Administration has not set a date to resume classes. I assume they're repairing the damaged classrooms, but I don't know that either.

Please think good thoughts for everyone connected with the school.

Horrible, but it seems that it could have been so much worse. Mr. Hill seems is a true hero. Hopefully your friend can find peace with what happened and can move on with his life.

The subject of my "hopefully" comment was for the teacher who does not know if "he'll" return or not. What I missed was the distraught teacher was not the friend Chris. But whatever.

Thanks to everyone who sent kind and healing thoughts toward Aztec High School. Classes resume on Monday after a week of ups and downs. Chris felt fine yesterday but said she burst into tears today over something that normally would be totally innocuous. She did not have an update on the distraught teacher; hasn't seen him since Friday. Funerals are Friday and Sunday mornings. I expect there will be packed houses at both.

More about the shooter:
And yet online, the 21-year-old New Mexico resident lived a prolific life as a white supremacist, pro-Trump meme peddler who was most known for his obsession with school shooters. For a half-decade, Atchison spent most of his days online, repeatedly posting threats of violence and cries for help.

When users saw posts from Atchison, who went by dozens of names like “Adam Lanza” and “Future Mass Shooter” on both larger platforms like YouTube and racist communities like The Daily Stormer, they would often ask how his manifesto was going.

Despite local law enforcement’s claims that he wasn’t a known threat, and a visit from the FBI in 2016, Atchison spent most of the last half-decade glorifying school shooters on alt-right websites and posting plaintive appeals for help in fixing his life, according to hundreds of posts analyzed by The Daily Beast.

In November, Atchison wrote on Steam, “How am I supposed to function in this world? Wherever I go, I see degeneracy. Pointless materialism, hedonism, sexual decay, dirty n***** who do nothing but slowly break down this society etc. it’s f***** everywhere. No way to escape it, 99% of people are part of it and whatever I do I am confronted with the death of the West. Go to the store and buy groceries in peace? Nope, here’s a group of LGBT liberal filth in line with you. And there’s a n***** family with 10 kids over there. And a Finn too, but he’s overweight as f*** and he’s buying alcohol and shit junk food. F***ing fantastic.
