Game #175: The Sound of Holiday Music

Identify the 95 songs in the clues below. Then, create 50 groupings – 4 stand-alones, 19 pairs, and 27 triples – according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself.

Eighteen songs will be used twice, four will be used three times, and one will be used four times. (It may – or may not – be significant that one of the songs was released by the same artists under two slightly different titles at two different times.)

In honor of the season, I have included several holiday songs. One of them will not form a part of any the matches listed above. It is a very special Christmas present which may point you toward the Tangredi. (It probably won’t, but it amuses me.)

It’s only fair to point out that the Tangredi itself has nothing whatsoever to do with the holidays

Even aside from the holiday songs, we stray further off the pop charts more often than usual on this one. Some people may be at more of an advantage than others.

1. Benedicta tu in mulieribus
Et benedictus,
Benedictus fructos ventris tui,
Ventris tui Jesus

I’m going to Hell for following that with….

2. Schoolgirl sweetie with a classy kinda sassy,
Little skirt's climbin' way up the knee.
There was three young ladies in the school gym locker
When I noticed they was lookin' at me.

3. You've given me a true love
And every day I thank you, love,
For a feeling that's so new,
So inviting, so exciting.

4. With you to stand beside me
I'll never be alone,
And what more could I long for
Than to have you for my own?

5. I remember when we broke up the first time
Saying, "This is it, I've had enough," 'cause, like,
We hadn't seen each other in a month
When you said you needed space. (What?)

6. Got nothing against a big town.
Still hayseed enough to say,
“Look who's in the big town.”

7. That old dog has chained you up alright,
Give you everything you need to live inside a twisted cage,
Sleep beside an empty rage.
I had a dream I was your hero.

8. The arms I long for will open wide
And you'll be proud to have me walkin' right by your side.

9. If I pinch you one pinch,
From your shy protective shell
Can I un-inch you one inch?
Will my blithesome, buxom beauty
Let her suitor do his duty?

10. When we met, the world was right,
Now I’m crying every night.

11. Seems like even her old girlfriends
Might be talking her down.
She's got her name on the grapevine,
Running up and down.

12. But how do you thank someone
Who has taken you from crayons to perfume?
It isn't easy, but I'll try.

13. Thou should always have faith in me,
Thou should always have faith in me
In everything I say and do,
In everything I say and do.

14. Decorations of red on a green Christmas tree
Won't be the same, dear, if you're not here with me

15. You ripple like a river when I touch you,
(Let me touch you.)
When I pluck your body like a string.
(Show you what I mean.)
When I start dancin' inside ya
(Oh, baby.)
You make me wanna sing
(I love you so.)

16. We finally sold the Chevy
When we had another baby
And you took that job in Tennessee.
You made friends at the farm
And you join them at the bar
Almost every single day of the week.

17. How'll I keep explainin' when they ask me where he's gone?
How'll I keep from cryin' when I bring their supper on?
How can I remind them to pray at their humble board?
How can I be thankful when they start to thank the Lord?

18. It took a rumor to make me wonder,
Now I'm convinced I'm going under.

19. You know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today.

20. It's so quiet in the streets
We can hear the sound of feet walkin’ by.
I'll put coffee on to brew,
We can have a cup or two
And do what other people do.

21. There's always gonna be another mountain,
I'm always gonna wanna make it move,
Always gonna be an uphill battle,
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose.

22. I woke up and called this morning,
The tone of your voice was a warning
That you don't care for me anymore.
I made up the bed we sleep in,
I looked at the clock when you creep in,
It's 6 AM and I'm alone.

23. Emptiness has found me
And it just won't let me go.
I go right on livin'
But why, I just don't know.

24. I have never seen that dress you're wearing,
Or the highlights in your hair that catch your eyes.
I have been blind.

25. Maybe it's intuition,
But some things you just don't question,
Like in your eyes I see my future in an instant
And there it goes.

26. I've got to take under my wing, tra-la,
A most unattractive old thing, tra-la,
With a caricature of a face,
With a caricature of a face.

27. It has a lovely body
With legs so short and thin
And when it gets all tired
It drops and I will win.

28. Take me in your arms, caress me gently.
Oh, I can't get enough,
Thrill me, say the word, I will surrender
To your poetic charms.

29. Ain't nothin' better,
We beat the odds together,
I'm glad we didn't listen,
Look at what we would be missin.'
They said "I bet they'll never make it"
But just look at us holdin' on,
We're still together still goin' strong.

30. The New Year's Eve we did the town,
The day we tore the goal post down….

31. Well, I might take a train,
I might take a plane.
But if I have to walk
I'm gonna get there just the same.

32. 'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp.

33. You don't know how long I have wanted
To touch your lips and hold you tight.
You don't know how long I have waited
And I was going to tell you tonight.

34. Don't tell me you agree with me
When I saw you kicking dirt in my eye.

35. And that old gray wind is blowing
And there's nothing left worth knowing
And its time you should be going.

36. There's no love song finer,
But how strange the change from major to minor.

37. You know what?
You wear overalls
And big old brogan shoes
And you need a haircut!

38. When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch.

39. The room is hot and that's good,
Some of my friends came by from the neighborhood,
The people startin' a climb the walls.
Ooh, it looks like everybody is having a ball!

40. Don't let him under your skin,
‘Cause you'll never win.
Don't give him love today,
Tomorrow he's on his way.

41. You know it's Christmas and my heart is open wide.
Gonna give you something so you know what's on my mind.

42. I'm shouting all about love
While they treated you like a dog.

43. It was only last June when her old man ran away,
She couldn't stop crying 'cause she knew he was gone 2 stay

44. Now I don't want this to scare ya,
But my bunkmate has malaria.

45. You came into my life.
The look in your eyes
Took me by surprise.
It's you and nobody else.
Your love has made me
So blind I can't see.

46. Down the market you can hear
Ladies cry out while on their heads they bear
'Akey' rice, salt fish are nice
And the rum is fine any time of year.

47. There's a glow in my heart I never felt before,
There's a girl at my side that I adore.

48. (spoken) He introduced me to Wiley Post, and he showed me the Hall of Fame with all the gold guitars and fiddles hanging on the walls. Then he said, "Tex, step over this way, there are two more of your friends I know you'll want to see, they're waitin' for you." There they were standin' side by side and smilin' at me – Hank Williams and Johnny Horton.

49. Can't I pretend
That I'm locked in the bend of your embrace?
For dreams are just like wine
And I am drunk with mine.

50. I’d buy you some art,
A Picasso or a Garfunkel.

51. To thrill you with delight
I'll give you diamonds bright.
There'll be things that will excite
To make you dream of me at night.

52. My friends look forward to their picnics on the beach.
Yes, everybody loves the summertime.
But you know, darling, while your arms are out of reach
The summer isn't any friend of mine.

53. If so, I can't imagine why.
We've all got time enough to cry.

54. And in our world of plenty, we can spread a smile of joy.
Throw your arms around the world at Christmas time.

55. I break the yolks and make a smiley face.
I kinda like it in my brand new place.
Wipe the spots up off the mirror,
Don't leave the keys in the door,
I never put wet towels on the floor anymore.

56. I ain't goin' to school, it starts too early for me.
Well, listen man, I ain't goin' to school no more,
It starts much, much too early for me.
I don't care about readin', writin', 'rithmetic or history.

57. And should I hang around,
Acting like her brother?
In a few more years,
They'd call us right for each other.

58. Watch my daddy in bed a-dyin',
Watch his hair been turnin' grey.
He's been workin' and slavin' his life away.

59. I lost my head and I said some things,
Now come the heartaches that morning brings.

60. Some things take so long,
But how do I explain
When not too many people
Can see we're all the same?

61. Our dreams won't come tumbling to the ground,
We'll hold them fast,
Darling, as the strongest book is bound,
We're bound to last.

62. You gave me love, you did me wrong.
Didn't know what to do.
But baby, I'm strong, gonna get over you.
A new boy I'm gonna choose.

63. Well, I've been waitin' ever since eight,
I guess my baby's got another date.

64. Sleigh bells in the air,
Beauty everywhere,
Yuletide by the fireside
And joyful memories there.

65. Well, I can't promise that I'll spend a day with you,
I can't promise that I'll find a way with you,
I can't promise,
No, I can't promise that I'll love you.

66. As my life goes on, I believe
Somehow something's changed,
Something deep inside,
Ooh, a part of me.
There's a strange new light in my eyes,
Things I've never known,
Changin' my life,
Changin' me.

67. The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned
I always built to last on weak and shifting sand.
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of the day,
And only now I see how the years ran away.

68. She never danced before,
So let her on the floor.

69. When your prized possessions start to weigh you down
Look in my direction, I'll be 'round, I'll be 'round.

70. All week long I dreamed about our Saturday date.
Don't you know that Sunday morning you can sleep late?

71. She helps me with my suitcase,
She stands before my eyes,
Driving me to the airport,
And to the friendly skies.

72. Then he rolled His big sleeves up
And a brand-new world began.
He created a woman and a lots of lovin' for a man.

73. What do you get when you kiss a guy?
You get enough germs to catch pneumonia.
After you do, he'll never phone ya.

74. Don't care to hear 'em play the tango,
I'm in no mood to dig a mambo,
It's way too early for the congo,
So keep a-rockin' that piano.

75. "What a beautiful wedding,
What a beautiful wedding," says a bridesmaid to a waiter.
And, “Yes, but what a shame,
What a shame the poor groom's bride is a whore."

76. Do my dreaming and my scheming,
Lie awake and pray,
Do my crying and my sighing,
Laugh at yesterday.

77. While shepherds kept their watching
O’er silent flocks by night,
Behold throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light.

78. Back through the years
I go wonderin' once again,
Back to the seasons of my youth.
I recall a box of rags that someone gave us
And how my momma put the rags to use.

79. I know it's not my fault, I did my best
God knows this heart of mine could use a rest.
But more and more I find
The dreams I left behind
Are somehow too real to replace.

80. If I tell you,
If I tell you now,
Will you keep on,
Will you keep on loving me?
If I tell you,
If I tell you how I feel,
Will you keep bringing out the best in me?

81. We're not scared to lose it all,
Security throw through the wall.
Future dreams we have to realize.
A thousand skeptic hands
Won't keep us from the things we plan
Unless we're clinging to the things we prize.

82. Down Lovers Lane we’ll wander,
Sweetheart, you and I.

83. Write your problems down in detail,
Take them to a higher place.
You've had your cry, no, I should say wail.
In the meantime hush your face.

84. First I get cold and hot,
Think I'm on fire, but I'm not.
Oh, what a pain I've got.

85. On a night when bad dreams become a screamer,
When they're messin' with a dreamer,
I can laugh it in the face.

86. She wasn't kind, I wasn't smart,
I lost my mind and fell apart.
I had to find myself in time,
Now I can start all over again.

87. The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by.

88. I took all those habits of yours
That in the beginning were hard to accept.
Your fashion sense, Beardsley prints,
I put down to experience.

89. I love how your heart beats whenever I hold you,
I love how you think of me without being told to.

90. Whoa, I'm not braggin' on myself, baby,
But I'm the one who loves you
And there's no one else.
Noooooooooo one else.

91. I felt a rush like a rolling bolt of thunder
Spinning my head around and taking my body under.

92. We're marching to a faster pace.
Look out, here comes the master race.

93. What happened to that funny face?
My little tomboy now wears satins and lace.

94. How they dance in the courtyard,
Sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember,
Some dance to forget.

95. It's that time of year
When the world falls in love.
Every song you hear seems to say,
"Merry Christmas
May your New Year's dreams come true."

Panis Angelicus -- every legit tenor who ever lived.

I’m going to Hell for following that with….

2. Schoolgirl sweetie with a classy kinda sassy,
Little skirt's climbin' way up the knee.
There was three young ladies in the school gym locker
When I noticed they was lookin' at me.

Walk This Way -- Aerosmith

3. You've given me a true love
And every day I thank you, love,
For a feeling that's so new,
So inviting, so exciting.

I Hear a Symphony -- Diana Ross and the Supremes

Hoping a consolidation will get this game moving again …

AVE MARIA

And every day I thank you, love,
For a feeling that's so new,
So inviting, so exciting.

4. With you to stand beside me
I'll never be alone,
And what more could I long for
Than to have you for my own?

5. I remember when we broke up the first time
Saying, "This is it, I've had enough," 'cause, like,
We hadn't seen each other in a month
When you said you needed space. (What?)
WE ARE NEVER EVER GETTING BACK TOGETHER, TAYLOR SWIFT

6. Got nothing against a big town.
Still hayseed enough to say,
“Look who's in the big town.”
SMALL TOWN, JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP

Give you everything you need to live inside a twisted cage,
Sleep beside an empty rage.
I had a dream I was your hero.

8. The arms I long for will open wide
And you'll be proud to have me walkin' right by your side.
ONE FINE DAY, THE CHIFFONS or CAROLE KING

Re: Game #175: The Sound of Holiday Music

#15 Post by franktangredi » Sat Dec 16, 2017 1:47 pm

In terms of what matters to the solution of the puzzle, every song has been correctly identified, though one title is incomplete in a way that matters. And, as noted in the instruction, there are actually two correct versions of one title.
jarnon wrote:Hoping a consolidation will get this game moving again …

I think the "two different versions" song must be 32. The Sound of Silence. It was originally released as The Sounds of Silence.

Picking off a couple of forgotten #1 hits here...

25. Maybe it's intuition,
But some things you just don't question,
Like in your eyes I see my future in an instant
And there it goes.

I KNEW I LOVED YOU, SAVAGE GARDEN

28. Take me in your arms, caress me gently.
Oh, I can't get enough,
Thrill me, say the word, I will surrender
To your poetic charms.

ROMANTIC, KARYN WHITE

And a couple of forgotten 1980s Top 10 hits here...

43. It was only last June when her old man ran away,
She couldn't stop crying 'cause she knew he was gone 2 stay

I COULD NEVER TAKE THE PLACE OF YOUR MAN, PRINCE

45. You came into my life.
The look in your eyes
Took me by surprise.
It's you and nobody else.
Your love has made me
So blind I can't see.

CATCH ME (I'M FALLING), PRETTY POISON

And why do I get the strange feeling that song #41 applies to this part of Frank's intro?
One of them will not form a part of any the matches listed above. It is a very special Christmas present which may point you toward the Tangredi. (It probably won’t, but it amuses me.)

A new consolidation may help a smart BB solve the Tangredi …

1. AVE MARIA
2. WALK THIS WAY, AEROSMITH
3. I HEAR A SYMPHONY, DIANA ROSS AND THE SUPREMES

Than to have you for my own?

Aside from one incomplete title, everything on here is correct that needs to be correct.

I won't claim this time that I thought this one would be easy. But I think it's gettable, though perhaps more gettable for some than for others.

Looking up what's left...

4. With you to stand beside me
I'll never be alone,
And what more could I long for
Than to have you for my own?

48. is partially correct. I found that the full title is (I DREAMED OF A) HILLBILLY HEAVEN.

Think I'm on fire, but I'm not.
Oh, what a pain I've got.
