we've got a gas main fire they're letting keep burning because to just turn off the gas would put 8,200 homes without heat in sub-zero temps.
So they're throwing sand on it & trying to somehow route around it.

i wonder how long the gas would have to be off to stop the fire or at least get it away from the leak, then turn the gas back on and make the fire easier to fight

Given the cold and the holiday, it would probably be a last choice to turn off gas lines and thus de-pressurize gas lines and put out thousands of furnaces.
Also, with the holiday. furnace repair guys would be harder and more expensive to get to deal with individual furnace problems in the area-those available would likely be swamped as problems arose.
