Fireball's Fantastic 500 -- Early 1970s, Part III

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Tue Jan 30, 2018 4:57 pm

As promised, I have the next songs on my countdown. I'm too excited to get on the road to Atlanta, so I probably won't be able to sleep tonight. I may be up at, like, four in the morning and out of Cincinnati by five. Who knows? Anyway, let's hear some music.

#61. Vincent, Don McLean (1972)

I like this song way better than that other Don McLean song from 1972, which shan't be named. That unmentionable song has been downright overhyped and overplayed, as far as I'm concerned.

#60. Fairytale, the Pointer Sisters (1974)

It was an interesting move by the Pointer Sisters to do a country song, but it worked beautifully. It was a hit on both the pop and country charts, it won a Grammy, and Elvis recorded his own version a year later.

#59. Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes), Edison Lighthouse (1970)

#58. The Ballad of Billy the Kid, Billy Joel (1974)

And now, we have the first of many entries from the Piano Man himself.

#57. Bell Bottom Blues, Derek & the Dominos (1971)

... and the first of many entries from Slow Hand.

#56. Send in the Clowns, Judy Collins (1973)

Yeah, you kinda knew this song would be on my list, considering all of the references that I've made to it over the years. It was just a matter of how high it would rank. You're not gonna see a whole lot of showtunes on my list, but this one undoubtedly belongs there... and not just because it's another perfect theme song for the Drumpf Administration. This is another song that has been passed around like a blunt at Snoop Dogg's mansion, with Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand doing their own versions at one time or another. But you really have to stick with the one that was the Top 40 hit.

#55. Rockin' Pneumonia-Boogie Woogie Flu, Johnny Rivers (1972)

#54. Sooner or Later, the Grass Roots (1971)

#53. Grandma's Hands, Bill Withers (1971)

His first single only made it up to #42, but it has since become one of his most beloved songs. Listen to the lyrics and you'll understand why.

#52. If You Could Read My Mind, Gordon Lightfoot (1970)

#51. The Air That I Breathe, the Hollies (1974)

And that's it from me until Friday, February 9.
