Lyrically Speaking - 1/31/18

#1 Post by Linus's Boss » Wed Jan 31, 2018 7:49 am

There is a lot of horrible, terrible things to be said about LB... but one thing I'll give him is that in nearly 20 years of loyal servitude, he's never posted a message on this Bored from work... unlike a lot of the rest of you lazy rejects. Part of that is because many of my fellow members in the Society of Bosses (SOB) have made sure he's kept his ass busy and away from internet access. Here's an LS game honoring a few of those wonderful people who have had the privilege of being able to tell LB what to do over the years. Each song contains the name of one of LB's former Mecca bosses. Sadly, there are no songs about an Antwon...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. I am a pool-shootin' boy
My name is Willie McCoy
But back home they call me Slim

2. And don't you know that a love can't grow
'Cause there's too much to give, 'cause you'd rather live
For the thrill of it all

3. Yes I did, I shot her
You know I caught her messin' round, messin' round town
Uh-yes I did, I shot her
You know, I caught my old lady messin' around town

4. Watching in a trance,
the crew is certain.
Nothing left to chance,
all is working.

5. I see your lips and I wonder who's been kissin' them.
I never knew how badly I was missin' them.
We both know we're never going to make it,
but when we touch, we never have to fake it

6. Freight train, each car
Looks the same, all the same
And no one knows the gypsy's name
And no one hears his lonely sighs

7. Now that you're gone
I'm left all alone
All by myself
To wander and roam
'cause I love my girl

8. Look over yonder what do you see
The sun is a-risin' most definitely
A new day is comin' people are changin'

9. Yes, my heart stood still
Yes, his name was Bill
And when he walked me home

10. Well she used to have a carefree mind of her own
And a delicate look in her eye

11. I really couldn't help
But fall in love with her
Her being there has
Made my life worth living

12. We got up there
We found all the garbage in there
And we decided it'd be
A friendly gesture for us to take
The garbage down to the city dump

Kroxquo Bonus: Name a song with artist that has the name of one of your former or current bosses in the title.

Image Bonus: Show me something that is totally boss.

Spoiler

You Don't Mess Around with Jim - Jim Croce

2. And don't you know that a love can't grow
'Cause there's too much to give, 'cause you'd rather live
For the thrill of it all

Rich Girl - Hall & Oates

3. Yes I did, I shot her
You know I caught her messin' round, messin' round town
Uh-yes I did, I shot her
You know, I caught my old lady messin' around town

Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix

4. Watching in a trance,
the crew is certain.
Nothing left to chance,
all is working.

Major Tom - Peter Schilling

5. I see your lips and I wonder who's been kissin' them.
I never knew how badly I was missin' them.
We both know we're never going to make it,
but when we touch, we never have to fake it

6. Freight train, each car
Looks the same, all the same
And no one knows the gypsy's name
And no one hears his lonely sighs

7. Now that you're gone
I'm left all alone
All by myself
To wander and roam
'cause I love my girl

Donna - Ritchie Valens

8. Look over yonder what do you see
The sun is a-risin' most definitely
A new day is comin' people are changin'

Crystal Blue Persuasion - Tommy James & the Shondells

9. Yes, my heart stood still
Yes, his name was Bill
And when he walked me home

Da Doo Ron Ron - Some interchangeable chick band - maybe the Earlettes?

10. Well she used to have a carefree mind of her own
And a delicate look in her eye

Veronica - Elvis Costello

11. I really couldn't help
But fall in love with her
Her being there has
Made my life worth living

12. We got up there
We found all the garbage in there
And we decided it'd be
A friendly gesture for us to take
The garbage down to the city dump

Alice's Restaurant Massacree - Arlo Guthrie (GD Mike around the corner never gave me back my AR album)

1. I am a pool-shootin' boy
My name is Willie McCoy
But back home they call me Slim
You Don't Mess Around With Jim - Jim Croce (Two of my overnight managers have had this name... and one of them was actually named Jim Walker!)

2. And don't you know that a love can't grow
'Cause there's too much to give, 'cause you'd rather live
For the thrill of it all
Rich Girl - Hall & Oates (With a steady stream of Annie Bonuses lately, I'm surprised so many of you missed this chance. Rich was an idiot. I should say, still IS an idiot since he's back on days where he belongs..)

3. Yes I did, I shot her
You know I caught her messin' round, messin' round town
Uh-yes I did, I shot her
You know, I caught my old lady messin' around town
Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix (Joe was nicknamed Doogie by us because he looked like a 14 year old kid. He was deathly allergic to those pine cone scented things that come in every Christmas, which posed a not very small problem for him....)

4. Watching in a trance,
the crew is certain.
Nothing left to chance,
all is working.
Major Tom (Coming Home) - Peter Schilling (Tom was a demoted store manager from Joisey who wound up in our store somehow. His favorite thing to do was send us home early so he could spend the rest of the night sleeping in the office...)

5. I see your lips and I wonder who's been kissin' them.
I never knew how badly I was missin' them.
We both know we're never going to make it,
but when we touch, we never have to fake it
Ah! Leah! - Donnie Iris (There are only a few of us left who worked under Leah 15 or so years ago.... but we damn well know how to do our jobs because she taught us all the tricks. She eventually left to become store manager at a neighboring Mecca, only to have the bevy of tenured associates there team up to get her fired...)

6. Freight train, each car
Looks the same, all the same
And no one knows the gypsy's name
And no one hears his lonely sighs
Melissa - Allman Brothers Band (Poor Melissa got thrown into the fire the first year they tried doing massive hour cuts on our shift, and she had to take the blame for nothing getting done. We all felt sorry for her, but that's why I don't have supervisor aspirations...)

7. Now that you're gone
I'm left all alone
All by myself
To wander and roam
'cause I love my girl
Donna - Ritchie Valens (A longtime department manager who was one of the last people I ever thought would come to nights. She did a brief tour as our hourly supervisor, and did not do it well...)

8. Look over yonder what do you see
The sun is a-risin' most definitely
A new day is comin' people are changin'
Crystal Blue Persuasion - Tommy James & The Shondells (Crystal was a farm girl, and a REAL piece of work. And I don't mean that in the flattering way... as in, Type AAAA+++ personality. Her and Leah would have gotten along together real swimmingly [or maybe killed each other])

9. Yes, my heart stood still
Yes, his name was Bill
And when he walked me home
Da Do Ron Ron - The Crystals (I did accept Shaun Cassidy despite the lyrical change. We had two Rons... one was the big half of a Mutt & Jeff tandem we once had. The other was a total creep and is the only member of salaried management we ever had fired from the store in my time there... for stealing Hot Wheels cars!)

10. Well she used to have a carefree mind of her own
And a delicate look in her eye
Veronica - Elvis Costello (I only regret that I was off the night Veronica and Leah supposedly got involved in one of the most epic shouting matches two managers have ever had on the salesfloor, while we were open. She eventually got run out of our store because she kept ordering entire trailers full of paper and chemical products..)

11. I really couldn't help
But fall in love with her
Her being there has
Made my life worth living
Who's Johnny - El Debarge (Our only overnight assistant who ever wore long dreadlocks. Like many of our managers over the years, he left to step down and take a lesser position at another store...)

12. We got up there
We found all the garbage in there
And we decided it'd be
A friendly gesture for us to take
The garbage down to the city dump
Alice's Restayrant Masacree - Arlo Guthrie (Alice was a fucking dingbat. I have no idea how she ever became an assistant manager... but she did, and since her overnight tour overlapped with Tom's, I am surprised we survived that rudderless time...)

Image Bonus: Show me something that is totally boss. - I was expecting Trump and Bruuuuuce and Tweed. Surprised so many people went for the car, and that nobody used George Steinbrenner or Boss Hogg. I was going to phrase the question as "Show me something Bossy," but figured everyone would be posting hockey players. Anyway... Weasel walking his fish like a boss made the best impression on me, so he gets earns the IBB, like a boss...

That's not what I said.

I said "I don't post while I'm working."

My boss, if he knew, might say, "You're not working if you're posting." Technically, he'd be right.

Therefore, if I'm not working if I'm posting, I'm not posting while I'm working. Mutually exclusive activities (unless your job is to post here). ;)

I was actually going by the fact that you posted your answers in the evening rather than morning as usual (combined with your earlier comment). This was the first time this year you were listed on the bottom half of my scoresheet...
