Lyrically Speaking - 2/9/18

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Feb 09, 2018 9:41 am

Welcome everyone to the luckiest event on the Bored! Where you too could take home millions of..... er, thousands of...... er.... a small handful of valuable points!!! It's the first ever LSWE slot machine tournament! All the fun of pressing buttons for hours without all the hand cramps or germs from the previous players! Here's how it works....

Below are 20 songs that each contain the symbols for the LSWE's made up slot machine. Symbols can ONLY be found within the titles of the songs. The slot machine grid looks like this:

Image

You will place nine of the songs you can correctly identify BOTH title AND artist for into any of the nine slots you wish in an attempt to get the maximum payout possible. The grid contains five paylines... all three rows and both diagonals. Only a line containing three like symbols, or substituting wild(s), will win you points.

The symbols with their payouts are as follows:

3 Cherries: 1 point
3 Bells: 2 points
3 Diamonds: 3 points
3 Hearts: 5 points
3 Gold Coins: 10 points
3 Sevens: 25 points
3 Wilds: 50 points

Wild symbols can take the place of any symbol in a line it falls within. There is also a double hidden in this game that serves as a wild symbol, and will double the payout of any line(s) it is used in.

If you can't identify at least nine of the songs below by BOTH title AND artist.... well, fill in what you have anyway. I'm sure there will be a few of you...

The points you accumulate in your winning grid do not go to your scores..... no, this game isn't about to get THAT crazy. This is a tournament... so the players with the top five total payouts in their grid will receive the following prizes that WILL get added to their LSWE scores...

5th place: 1 point
4th place: 3 points
3rd place: 5 points
2nd place: 10 points
1st place: 20 points

In the event of any ties, prize points for those slots will be pooled together and split between the tied players, with totals rounded up to the next whole number if there is a remainder.

Good luck everyone!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

I messed up and did not get optimum points on the slot machine, but this was a great idea for a game.

Spoiler

1. When the lights go down in the California town,
People are in for the evening.
Gold - John Stewart (Songs rarely take me back to a certain time in the way they do some people... but there are many where I can instantly recall a specific place and time I heard it. This one will always remind me of an Amoco station off Exit 12 in Independence, MO. During the first of our two family trips to Colorado on the night of June 6, 1996, it was playing on the PA in the restroom there. I hadn't heard it probably since I was a little kid, and realized what a groovy little tune it was... while taking a leak.)

2. I felt a little fear, upon my back
I said don't look back, just keep on walking
(Woo-hoo, woo-hoo)
Black Horse and the Cherry Tree - KT Tunstall (Another artist Mecca tried to prop up, without much success. They still play the hell out of both of her hits on Mecca Radio, though...)

3. I'm glad you're home
Well, did you really miss me?
I guess you did by the look in your eye (look in your eye, look in your eye)
Ring My Bell - Anita Ward

4. There are stars in the southern sky
Southward as you go.
Seven Bridges Road - Eagles

5. where is all you angels now the figureheads have fell
and lovers war with arrows over secrets they could tell
The Wild Boys - Duran Duran

6. Oh my love you're like a precious stone
Part of earth where heaven has rained on

Day or nighttime you're like a shinin' star
Diamond Girl - Seals & Croft

7. I don't want to fade away
Give me one more day, please
I don't want to fade away
In your heart, I long to stay
Bell Bottom Blues - Derek & The Dominoes

8. I've had to work much harder than this
For something I want don't try to resist me
Open Your Heart - Madonna

9. This time I had a good time, ain't got time to wait
I wanna stick around till I can't see straight
Double Vision - Foreigner (You didn't stand much of a chance of winning the tourney if you didn't identify this song... the game's only doubler)

10. Love, love on the run, breaking us down,
Though we keep holding on.
I don't want to lose, no I can't let you go
Tell It To My Heart - Taylor Dayne

11. I wait in the darkness of my lonely room

Tuesday's just the same as Monday without the surprising part
Seven Day Weekend - Gary U.S. Bonds

18. Clouds covered love's
Barb-wired snare
Strung up, strung out
I just can't go without
Gold On The Ceiling - The Black Keys (HUGE Mecca earworm from the past couple years. I absolutely love this song...)

19. So if you've got someone whose love is tru-u-ue
Let it shine for yo-ou-ou
This Diamond Ring - Gary Lewis & The Playboys

20. Fire all of your guns at once and
Explode into space

Choose nine songs above that you have correctly identified both title and artist for to place in the slot machine grid above. You want to try and get the highest payout possible from the songs you have to work with.

Some of you obviously do not play the slot machines... or maybe go to casinos at all. Good for you!!!

I regretted coming up with this idea as soon as I realized I was actually going to have to score it. But I'm pretty sure I have these totals correct... and keep in mind that there was a requirement that you correctly identify BOTH title AND artist to be able to use a song in your grid. So if your totals seem a bit lower than you expected... you probably either used a song you had an incorrect answer on, or you misunderstood how the paylines work....

Payout totals:

1. Weasel - 162 - +20 points!
2. Anon - 120 - +10 points!
3. frank - 116 - +5 points!
4. Earl - 86 - +3 points!
5. mrk - 80 + 1 point!

6. TBone - 76
7. elwood - 73
8. Search - 70
9. Esto - 65
10. BiT - 50
11. melly - 40
12. Hottie - 20
13. Sprots - 3
14. Vandal - 2
15. ear - 0
16. Krox - Shot the machine
17. Beebs - Yeah right

Carp! I thought the stupid vertical matches worked, too.

Could have had 175 points if I'd done what I meant to under the rules. As they say on Amazing Race, RTFC!!!!

You could have used the Neil Young song Heart of Gold and had it count for either one.
