WHIZ KIDS WEEK #4

Yash Kadadi
Atlanta, GA

Yash is going for $20,000. He has his 50:50 and +1 lifelines remaining. Yash has an alter ego, either "DJ Kadadi" or "Yash Daddy" because he did a math rap.

$20,000: Because it's evenly divisible by every integer between 1 and 10, what did Plato consider to be an ideal number?
A - 1,880
B - 3,450
C - 5,040
D - 7,770

Yash says that they are all divisible by 1, 2 and 5. He then notes that

to be divisible by 3 the digits must sum up to a number divisible by 3, so he eliminates 1,880
. He works through the others carefully.
Spoiler
Answer: C (5,040)

C - two of the above
D - all of the above

the first statement is true, he doubts the second is true and doesn't know about the third one
. He uses his 50:50 to narrow down the choices.
Spoiler
"50:50 results": C & D

Yash says that makes it a lot easier.
Spoiler
Answer: C (two of the above)

Yash doesn't think it's
Spoiler
C
. He says his dad is good with roots and words, so he calls on him as his +1. He's been thinking since he saw the question; he doesn't know so he's guessing. He says
Spoiler
ananym sounds like antonym so he eliminates it
. Yash says they need to look at the first few letters of each word. When he saw
Spoiler
allonym he thought of allotrope, a chemical term referring to two elements that are the same but differ in configuration
. He and his dad think that
Spoiler
metonym is like higher level or different, as in metadata or metamorphosis
.

A math question for a math rapper. I enjoyed the methodical way he worked through to the right answer.

A breakdown of the words.

Spoiler
Met- prefixes have a lot of meanings including: among, between, after, later, and along with. Metonym specifically means a word that can substitute for another like Washington for the U.S. government or bottle for alcohol. In this case the meto- means "change" as in metamorphosis. Metonymy is similar to synecdoche.

The other words:
ananym: ana- back or backward. A word that is created by spelling another word backward. ex. daraf which is the opposite of a farad unit or Erewhon, the reverse (sort of) of "nowhere".
demonym: demo- people or population. The name for inhabitants of or from a particular place. ex. Michigander for residents of Michigan or Hoosier for people from Indiana.
allonym: allo- other or different. An assumed name usually of another famous person. ex. "Publius" was the pen name used by Hamilton, Jay, and Madison to write the Federalist Papers. The author Franklin W. Dixon would be an allonym for the various authors of the Hardy Boys books.
