10K: +1 because I've never heard the word aphthong. 3 choices have silent letters. But diff 3 have weirdly- pronounced letters.

We saw him in Las Vegas in December. My wife and daughter loved him, me not so much.

This guy's antics had my eyes rolling so much, I think I hurt myself.

I'll give him a pass on his costume, since that's his whole shtick. But while regular contestants have their cell phones, wallets and anything else that might possibly hide a cheat sheet confiscated for the duration of the taping, Piff walks out with an entire collapsible prop table. So, I expect he's going to use that to perform some magic tricks during his run. Instead, he opens it up only to pour himself a mug of cocoa from a thermos and to open up a bag of donuts to munch on. Later, he takes out a lollipop.

And after he leaves a lifeline on the table when he votes for Peruvian pecan pies, he gets invited back for some more screen time duing the "audience" contestant game.

The prefix "a" usually means something is missing or absent. An atheist doesn't believe in God. An agnostic lacks knowledge. Aphasia is an inability to speak. So I felt fairly confident that aphthong referred to a letter combination with a silent letter. --Bob

I was looking into the etymology of aphthong. It is interesting.

Spoiler
I was trying to make it into aph-thong but it is a-phthong. The a- is the usual "without" and -phthongus which is from the Greek for "clear, distinct sound." Phthong seemed really strange to me until I realized it is in words like diphthong. I think I usually misspell it without that first "h" and I certainly don't pronounce it DIFF-thong but that is probably more correct. Ophthalmology has that -phth but that is from ophthalmos which is Greek for eye.
