Fireball's Fantastic 500 -- Early 1970s, Part V

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Fri Feb 16, 2018 4:33 pm

I've got the music in me. I've got the music in me. Do you?

We're officially into the second half of this portion of the countdown. Here come ten more songs to get you thinking and reminiscing.

#40. An Old Fashioned Love Song, Three Dog Night (1971)

An appropriate description of what this entire countdown is all about.

#39. Bette Davis Eyes, Jackie DeShannon (1974)

Very few people know that Jackie DeShannon co-wrote this song, which became a massive #1 hit for Kim Carnes in 1981. Even fewer people know that Jackie recorded it first. There's just something whimsical about the cabaret style of this song, after 37 years of listening to the synth-pop version.

#38. Midnight at the Oasis, Maria Muldaur (1974)

#37. Taxi, Harry Chapin (1972)

#36. Rainy Days and Mondays, the Carpenters (1971)

#35. Too Late to Turn Back Now, Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose (1972)

#34. Garden Party, Rick Nelson & the Stone Canyon Band (1972)

The former teen idol made a brief musical comeback in the early 1970s with this quirky number that would become his final Top 10 hit.

#33. All I Know, Art Garfunkel (1972)
Boney Hall of Fame: #236

The legendary Jimmy Webb wrote this song, which became Art's only Top 10 hit without Paul Simon. We saw another popular Jimmy Webb tune earlier in this series--way back in my first presentation, with the 5th Dimension's "Up, Up and Away".

#32. You're My Home, Billy Joel (1973)
Boney Hall of Fame: #120

And it was only a matter of time before Billy Joel got his second entry on my list. This is a lesser-known song from the "Piano Man" album... but obviously not lesser-known to T_Bone, as he ranked it quite high. I like this song a lot better than that played-out title track.

#31. Precious and Few, Climax (1971)

And here's a short and sweet one-hit wonder to close out this week's program.

What could possibly rank higher than these great songs? You'll have to come back next Friday for more.
"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

"In times of crisis, the wise build bridges. The foolish build barriers." --Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020)

Vocal by Sonny Geraci, who sang in The Outsiders ("Time Won't Let Me").

Again, I like most of these songs, especially the Art & Billy tunes (for obvious reasons  _
