David Schuchinski
Santa Monica, CA

David has $10,000 in his bank and all his lifelines.

$20,000: You probably know that Brazil is South America's largest country by area, but what are its next three largest countries, in order?
A - Peru, Argentina, Venezuela
B - Argentina, Peru, Ecuador
C - Peru, Argentina, Bolivia
D - Argentina, Peru, Colombia

Right off the bat David tends to think that
Spoiler
Argentina is bigger than Peru
, but figuring out which of the others is larger is tough. David calls for his +1, his friend Ryan. who thinks he knows it. They play trivia together and they've had the question about the largest countries through which the Equator passes, and
Spoiler
Colombia
is on the list.
Spoiler
Answer: D (Argentina, Peru, Colombia)

$30,000: Famous for capturing a Depression-era mom with her children in "Migrant Mother," what photographer placed her own children in foster care to pursue her work?
A - Margaret Bourke-White
B - Diane Arbus
C - Dorothea Lange
D - Cindy Sherman

David likes photography and knows all four of them, and who photographed "Migrant Mother".
Spoiler
Answer: C (Dorothea Lange)

$50,000: Though it might sound like a nonsense word, what does the band Hanson say is the actual meaning of the title of their 1997 megahit "MMMBop"?
A - an unexpected kiss
B - a short period of time
C - the sound of a heart breaking
D - a great idea

David "really, really" doesn't know, so he asks the audience.
Spoiler
Ask the Audience results:
A - 37%
B - 24%
C - 24%
D - 15%

David feels like most of the song is nonsense, but it's upbeat so it doesn't sound like
Spoiler
a heartbreak
. He tries the 50:50.
Spoiler
"50:50 results": A & B

David's inclination from the beginning was
Spoiler
A
because the song is upbeat and
Spoiler
it doesn't make sense to refer to a short period of time
. He goes for it.
Spoiler
Answer: B (a short period of time)

commercial break

I'd have done what David did and asked the audience. But knowing the "second most popular answer is often the right one" when the percentages are close, I might have come up with the right answer. On the other hand, since B & C both got the same percentage and C was eliminated, I might not have used that rule.

One of my siblings (don't know which) got the Hanson album when it was popular, and my brother and I listened to it in my car less than a week before this episode aired. Even without having recently heard it, though, I was familiar enough with the song that I'd have gotten the $50k question right; I remembered the lyric "in an mmmbop they're gone." Unfortunately, the line "Can you tell me? You say you can, but you don't know" applies pretty well to David in this case.
