On Fortnite and the Parkland Massacre

#1 Post by Spock » Sat Mar 03, 2018 10:54 am

I note that roughly concurrent with the Parkland Massacre and the intense focus on AR-15's and teenage boys, that we have a video game sensation (Fortnite) that involves teen boys shooting virtual Ar-15's.

It strikes me as odd, in this day of endless TV and internet chatter, that I have never seen that juxtaposition even mentioned, let alone analyzed.

Have you played it or are you taking someone's word for it?

Here's an ad:

How many teens with AR-15's can you count?

Good Morning America just had a story on Fortnite. But Spock scooped them.

Pres. Trump will be meeting with video game executives to discuss violent content.

Aren't the same games available in other countries? I wonder why they don't have many mass shootings?

Maybe it's because they operate on 220V.

With a cherry picker, of course.

For one, he set very narrow criteria for what he considers a mass shooting. He also includes terrorist attacks.

That's not cherry picking.

Broadening the definition certainly is not cherry picking.

As long as he is consistent in his definition, it is not cherry picking.

Broadening the definition is cherry picking when you broaden the definition for the sole purpose of skewing the findings in your direction. And, they didn't just broaden the definition. They broadened it in one way, by including gang shootings, and narrowed it another, by excluding terrorist acts. Obviously, by excluding gang shootings (common in the US) and including terrorist acts (more common in Europe), you skew the statistics. The fact that other studies use the same definition is beside the point, because they were studies conducted for different purposes, for which such definitions were helpful in forming valid conclusions..

I realize that Slate isn't the most unbiased of sources, but I found this article interesting.
