Fireball's Fantastic 500 -- Early 1970s, Part VIII

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Fri Mar 09, 2018 4:58 pm

It's finally time to close this chapter of the countdown. It's the top ten list--direct from the home office in Wahoo, Nebraska. Here we go!

#10. Come and Get Your Love, Redbone (1974)

#9. Let's Get It On, Marvin Gaye (1973)

More baby-making music. When you hear those first three seconds, you know exactly what's about to go down. It was a #1 hit in 1973, it's #1 in the hearts of lovers everywhere, and it's #1 on my 1973 list.

#8. Burning Love, Elvis Presley (1972)

Although the King himself never liked this song, it has since become one of the songs most closely associated with him. The phrase "a hunk, a hunk o' burnin' love" has been imitated six ways to Sunday. I just love everything about this song. The melody, the lyrics, Elvis' vocals... everything! I was over the moon when the Elvis impersonator du jour performed this song at Dick Clark's American Bandstand Theater when I was in Branson, MO, with my family in the summer of 2016. I lip-synced every single word of it. It sounded as good as the recorded version. The King would be proud.

#7. Let It Be, the Beatles (1970)

#6. Lean on Me, Bill Withers (1972)

The classic tune of friendship gets Bill his second entry on my countdown.

#5. If You Really Love Me, Stevie Wonder (1971)

Stevie can't lose with me. He's on my countdown for the fourth time, and we're not even one-fifth of the way through this series.

#4. Mighty Love, the Spinners (1974)

Don't look now, though! Here come the Spinners with their third song on the Top 500.

#3. Rainy Night in Georgia, Brook Benton (1970)

A rainy night in Atlanta is better than a sunny day in Cincinnati. Who said that first? I did!

#2. Levon, Elton John (1971)

A lot of you will consider this a rather interesting pick for my favorite Elton John song of this half of the decade because it only made it to #24 on the Hot 100 and there are plenty of bigger Elton John hits to choose from. Jon Bon Jovi would not disagree with me on this pick because, according to Jon Bon Jovi himself, this is his all-time favorite song.

And this is what you've been waiting for since January! My all-time favorite song of 1970-74 is...

#1. Without You, Harry Nilsson (1972)

This song was originally written and recorded by Badfinger in 1970, but Nilsson's cover version made the song iconic. He took the song to #1 on the Hot 100, the AC chart, the UK singles chart, and the Australian singles chart. He also won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance and was nominated for Record of the Year. It is said that nearly 200 artists have covered this song over the past 40-plus years. Paul McCartney once called this "the killer song of all time". Can't argue with Sir Paul!

That's 101 songs down and 399 songs to go! Next week, we start the completion of the 1970s with our first look at songs from 1975-79. How many more singles can Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and the Spinners place on my list? You'll just have to wait for those answers.
"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

Nothing here that I don't like. Love that Spinners song. And Nilsson's vocal on "Without You" is one for the ages
