Jonathan Laubinger
Bridgewater, MA

Jonathan is going for $20,000 with all lifelines still available.

$20,000: Later improving on his own world record, in 1989 Cuban Athlete Javier Sotomayor became the first and so far only person to break what track & field barrier?
A - 3-minute mile
B - 8-foot high jump
C - 20-foot pole vault
D - 30-foot long jump

Jonathan isn't willing to say anything because he wants to ask the audience and doesn't want to mislead them.
Spoiler
Ask the Audience results:
A - 22%
B - 36%
C - 29%
D - 13%

That's not the overwhelming majority he was looking for. He thinks he needs to use another lifeline, so he calls down his +1, his cousin Matt. Matt recognizes the name but only as a track & field athlete. But some of the records don't look like a Cuban athlete would achieve them. Any answer would only be a guess. Jonathan thinks

the 3-minute mile seems unrealistic
. Together they conclude that it's either
Spoiler
B or C
so they use the 50:50.
Spoiler
"50:50 results": B & D

Matt says he'd go with
Spoiler
B
but that's a gut reaction. Jonathan decides to pick one because he wants to see what comes next. He goes with Matt's gut.

Answer: B (8-foot high jump)

commercial break

If Jonathan wins big, he wants to buy his mother a house. He told her he was going to do "this or that", and wanted to surprise her.

$30,000: With the oldest of his still-existing creations dating to 1720, Bartolomeo Cristofori is the largely forgotten inventor of which musical instrument?
A - guitar
B - violin
C - piano
D - trombone

Jonathan doesn't know the answer; if it were Stradivarius he would know it was the violin. He would like to stay longer, but he's going to walk away.
Spoiler
Answer: C (piano)

"But some of the records don't look like a Cuban athlete would achieve them" sounds a bit stereotypical, since none of these sports is like ski jumping.

(Warning: mildly political) Based on Pres. Trump's comment, the record holder for C is probably Mexican.

I'm not really good in sports trivia but I knew this one.
