Korea

Either Kim Jong-Un is playing out a world class, extremely dangerous con game, or he may be serious.
If the latter, and it turns out that the Korean War is at an end, and North Korea joins the civilized world, it is an absolutely stunning event.

And, to the chagrin of the trump haters, the President will deserve most of the credit for it. And it will once again prove that 'Peace through Strength' works much better than 'Peace through Appeasement'. Let's hope and pray that it is for real, and that the President is successful in trusting but verifying.

If any President should get credit, it's Obama for imposing an economic blockade that forced Kim to make nice. The U.S. has nothing to do with the current negotiations. Hell, trump isn't even trying to take credit for it.

If only Moon had checked with you and deferred to your superior knowledge of the situation before crediting our president. I'm only surprised you didn't credit Rodman.

The President who deserves most of the credit is the President of South Korea who did the heavy lifting during the Olympic games and afterwards.

The North Koreans have made noise before but it always breaks down when it comes to the issue of proving they have denuclearized. It remains to be seen just what they are willing to give up in concrete terms as opposed to happy talk and handshakes.

I'll believe it when I can see it and hope that there will actually be some kind of 'real' to all this.

But I can't see giving credit or blame to any current or recent president for this. Sure, what the U.S. does will affect Korea to some extent but whatever we have done (or not done) is certainly not the catalyst to spark any North Korea / South Korea peace movement.

The US currently has 23,468 servicemen on duty at 83 sites in South Korea and has been the major presence for decades. North Korea has never been concerned with what South Korea could do. To say the president of South Korea did "heavy lifting" is laughable in regards to motivating North Korea to do anything.

If you want to give credit to something other than Trump's diplomacy (or lack thereof), you'd be wrong, but you'd be more correct in saying the collapse of North Korea's nuclear test site is a current motivating factor. Kim is looking for a safe place to hang out.

23,000 U.S. servicemen and women did not put on a big dog-and-pony show for the North Koreans during the Olympics, all of which was designed to play to Kim's ego. The current South Korean regime is much more open to negotiating with the North than its immediate predecessors were.

I'm not sure what's the difference between Trump's "diplomacy" and George Bush putting North Korea as part of the axis of evil 15 years ago.

But I agree with BiT (and didn't want to bring it up first) that the North Koreans may not be in a position right now to do any more nuclear testing even if they want to, so it doesn't cost them anything to try to run the clock out somewhat. They can always invent some excuse to break off talks or to pull out of any agreement before they make any real concessions if that's what they want.

Hard to argue with this. She's in a position to know.

Oh, and "This Is CNN"

South Korea credits Trump for opening door to talks with North
South Korea's foreign minister has said she believes President Donald Trump is largely responsible for bringing North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to the negotiating table.

It's called diplomacy. It's something most world leaders are skilled in and also something that Donald Trump has never heard of.

Whatever you may call it, Bush had 8 years and so did Obama and things got worse. If North Korea does end up joining the civilized world, it is trump who will get the credit in the end, fairly or unfairly, and that really sticks in your craw, doesn't it? So you seem to be wishing it doesn't happen, aren't you?

I wonder how this fits into bob-tel's pledge?
