It's a conjugation of the irregular verb "decir," to say. Third person plural past preterite. "They said." --Bob

Probably would have missed that one, too.

"Preterite". A new word! To me, anyway. And I used to love diagramming sentences. They were holding out on me in 4th/5th grade, it seems.

The clue here is 100. "We surveyed 100 <people> and the top <n> answers are on the board."

Estonut:

Like I said, I NEVER WATCHED THE SHOW. So catchphrases from it, like "Survey Says", wouldn't immediately leap to mind & then be translated into Spanish, a language I can't speak, & not even translated word-for-word.

Although I've forgotten most English grammatical terms, I don't think we really have a preterite in English. In Spanish (and Latin), there are two different aspects of the past tense. You use the preterite for a specific point in time that has a beginning and an end: "Yesterday morning, I -walked- to the post office." You use the imperfect for a more general, habitual action: "Every day, I -walked- to the post office."

There are other rules for using the two aspects, but preterite vs imprefect is probably one of the bigger stumbling blocks for English speakers learning Spanish.
