Me and Wiki don't know any of these people, and we don't know anything about them beyond what you told us about them. Come to think of it, I don't think either of us personally knows anybody named John, including little kids named Johnny. Don't parents ever name their baby boys John any more? But, I do know what I've learned from Annie, my big sis. She still sends me eyelid messages from time to time. She says that all the people and critters that most folks on Earth think are dead are still alive. They are, she said, still living in a different place. (Her exact words were "on a different plane," but Annie didn't like airplanes all that much, so I think she just made an eyelid messaging typo.) Annie said that living in the new place was just as much fun and just as interesting as the old place, but cleaner and more shiny. She said that she, Mr. Mozart, BeBe, Irish, Ashley, and Tigger, her big sister and my grandbigsis, were all in the new place. I did not ask her about anybody named John, because I didn't want you to think I was cheating.

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
