Fireball's Fantastic 500 -- Early 1980s, Part V

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Fri Jun 15, 2018 3:56 pm

Don't you stop it... don't you stop, stop the music. We're into the top forty of this half of the decade, the quarter post of the entire decade. I can't guarantee that any of these songs will win a Triple Crown with any of you, but they will forever rotate in my music player.

#40. All Out of Love, Air Supply (1980)

One of the very few Air Supply songs that I can still tolerate.

#39. A Woman Needs Love (Just Like You Do), Ray Parker, Jr. & Raydio (1981)

Ray had a lot of big hits before "Ghostbusters". This was his last Top 10 before Raydio called it quits. Interestingly, some of the lyrics to this song reference Raydio's first Top 10 hit, "Jack and Jill"--both of which were mercifully spared from being used in that awful Adam Sandler movie.

#38. Tonight, I Celebrate My Love, Peabo Bryson & Roberta Flack (1983)

#37. Cupid/I've Loved You for a Long Time Medley, the Spinners (1980)

The fourth appearance by the Spinners and the second Sam Cooke cover to appear on my list. "Another Saturday Night" was featured way back at #74 on the Early 1970s list.

#36. Hold Me, Fleetwood Mac (1982)

The biggest single from their Mirage album. This song holds a dubious distinction in Billboard history--stalling out at the #4 spot on the Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks. Songs that prevented this hit from getting into the Top 3 during those seven weeks: Steve Miller Band's "Abracadabra", Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger", John Mellencamp's "Hurts So Good", Toto's "Rosanna", and my #52 song of this half of the decade--Chicago's "Hard to Say I'm Sorry".

#35. Hold Me, Teddy Pendergrass & Whitney Houston (1984)

Two songs called "Hold Me" next to each other, but two totally different songs. This duet didn't quite make the Top 40, but it did soar up to #6 on the AC chart and #5 on the R&B Singles chart. It was the first of many, many hit singles for Whitney.

#34. Give Me the Night, George Benson (1980)

#33. I'm So Excited, the Pointer Sisters (1982)

Yes, I am whenever the Pointer Sisters sing. This song charted twice on the Hot 100--at #30 on its initial release and at #9 two years later.

#32. You Make My Dreams, Daryl Hall & John Oates (1981)

#31. More Love, Kim Carnes (1980)

Kim's sultry cover version of the 1960s hit by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles.

Thirty songs to go before we check out the second half of the decade!
"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

"In times of crisis, the wise build bridges. The foolish build barriers." --Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020)
