5. HOT + 36. STUFF and 14. NO MORE + 87. TEARS = 103. Donna Summer

I also think Melly is right about Bobby Vinton and the Billy Joel and Elton John matches are wrong. I see a Captain Jack in there, which would replace Big Shot in the Billy Joel match, and I think Island Girl is in that vein of "too generic" that Frank said wouldn't work.

I'll post an updated consolidation in a minute. We're like halfway done!

The "too generic" thing would apply if there's more than one way to make that exact match. The Elton John match is indeed half wrong ... but it's the other half.

Added Bobby Vinton, took out Elton John and replaced the second half of Billy Joel.

Game #182: Title and Artist (and Vice Versa)

Identify the 120 songs below. Then, match them into 35 groups of five according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. 45 songs will be used twice, each time in a different capacity. Five songs will be used three times, each time in a different capacity. (There are only three possible capacities in which a song may be used.)

No song will be matched with itself.

This game will require a very precise following of the rules, once you figure out what the rules are.

Let’s kick things off with the song everyone has been waiting for –

Not sure about this one -- it may violate the no two ways rule:

66. THESE + 108. EYES and 44. AMERICAN + 8. WOMAN = 92. The Guess Who

Not sure about this one yet, since it messes up both the Springsteen match (again) and the Pat Boone match. I've added it to my consolidation for now, but I'm going to keep looking for other Michael Jackson songs, because Dirty Diana is too good to pass up.

Here's three more, which caused some reconstruction. I'll post another consolidation soon.

2. BAD + 87 BLOOD and 71. WHITE + 100. HORSE = 48. Taylor Swift

77. BABY + 27. ONE MORE TIME and 90. GIMME + 14. MORE = 117. Britney Spears

53. POP + 75. LIFE and 120. I WANNA BE YOUR Man + 88. Friend & LOVER = 16. PRINCE

Only a few left. I still think there's a Rolling Stones match here somewhere, since Brown Sugar has survived so long. But maybe not. We're down to 4 or 5 matches left to get, approximately, subject to what happens to Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, and maybe a couple of others. I changed the second Donna Summer song to Last Dance, in order to free up songs for the (now completed) Taylor Swift match.

By my count, this makes 34 matches - we need one more.

I think it's the Rolling Stones match because neither song has been used in another match. That's not true for either Lady or Madonna (thanks to this match).

I may be miscounting, but I've only got 33. We've also got three songs that don't have any match yet. (below) I've been through the entire Beatles, Stones, and Fats Domino discography without finding another match.

78. Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter – Herman's Hermits
30. Fly – Sugar Ray
31. Come on Down to my Boat, Baby – Every Mother's Son

Frank, can you confirm that the 33 matches we've got are correct?

You're missing half of one and half of another. In your list of three songs that haven't been used, two of them actually have been identified as one of the half-matches. You've been looking through the right discographies.

One problem is that one of the songs has been linked to the cover artist and not the original artist. The cover was actually the bigger hit, but the lyric I used for the song indicated that I wanted the original artist. Once you identify the artist, th key word will jump out at you.

Great job on this!

Yeah, I quit marking songs that were only partial matches, because so many of them turned out to be false. So if I'm reading Frank's message right, our two partials are the two matches we need to finish. So we're looking for another Rolling Stones song and another song by either the Beatles or Fats Domino.

Song #113 is actually "Hey There Lonely Boy" by Ruby & The Romantics & that gives us:

78. Mrs. BROWN You've Got A Lovely Daughter + 30. SUGAR Ray & 113. RUBY & The Romantics + 49. TUESDAY Afternoon = 7. THE ROLLING STONES

THANK YOU!!!!!

I kept looking at the puzzle and thinking, "Why isn't there a Ruby somewhere in the artists for Tuesday afternoon?" I had completely forgotten that there was an earlier, gender-swapped version of Lonely Girl.

So it's Lady Madonna and some combination of Come on Down to my boat, Baby by Every mother's son, and some song that already has two things marked off. By Frank's instruction, there will be five songs used thrfee times, and we only have four, at least by my count.
