Fireball's Fantastic 500 -- Early 1980s, Part VII

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Sat Jun 30, 2018 8:41 am

Yesterday was yet another busy day for me. Javon and I finally started the task of packing up some of his stuff. We leave for Virginia next Saturday because his freshman orientation is July 11 and 12. It's kind of hitting me now that it's going to feel a lot quieter and lonelier around here in only two weeks.

Meanwhile, here are ten more songs that--unlike porn videos--can benefit from closed-captioning.

#20. I Can't Hold Back, Survivor (1983)

#19. Misled, Kool & the Gang (1984)

#18. I Need You, the Pointer Sisters (1983)

#17. Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You, George Benson (1984)

Glenn Medeiros had a big hit with his cover version of this song in 1987, but I prefer the original by a mile.

#16. Turn Your Love Around, George Benson (1982)

Why have one George Benson song when we can have two in a row? He gets four songs on my early 1980s list--all of them in the top half and two on the top twenty--to bring his overall total to six songs. At the exact halfway point of the Fantastic 500, George Benson is tied with Billy Joel for the most appearances on my list.

#15. You Are, Lionel Richie (1983)

#14. Sweet Baby, Stanley Clarke & George Duke (1981)

#13. And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going, Jennifer Holliday (1982)

SHOWTUNE ALERT! Jennifer gave her all on this showstopper from "Dreamgirls", which became her only pop hit. Another Jennifer H. belted her way to an Oscar in the film version of this musical 25 years later. But this Jennifer H. ABSOLUTELY SLAYED!

#12. Gypsy, Fleetwood Mac (1982)

Hold the phone, folks! Fleetwood Mac has also placed six songs to make it a three-way tie at the top! Stevie delivered another winner with this song that she wrote in tribute to a friend who died of cancer. F**k cancer.

#11. Better Be Good to Me, Tina Turner (1984)

Tina rocks hard with this Top 5 smash from her iconic Private Dancer album. This video is one of the rare times that Tina is seen wearing pants in public, thus forgoing the display of her trademark legs.

We will finish up this half of the 1980s some time next week. The list may not necessarily be posted on Friday. It may come much sooner so that I'm not rushing to do so many things before moving day.
