50 ways to walk-off

Alex Bregman did it again last night with a 5 ft. walk-off "hit" (actually an error by the catcher).

Earlier this year he hit a 10th inning walk-off infield fly, 15 ft in front of home plate, where the first basement overshot the ball where it fell to the ground like a pee-wee league play, allowing the runner on 3rd base to score and the Astros to win.

Last night Bregman hit a chopper that hit the ground behind home plate, bounced toward 1st base then slowly rolled into fair territory about 5 ft from home plate. Alex thinking it was foul did not attempt to run until the catcher ran over an picked it up in fair territory making it a fair ball. As the catcher bare hands the ball to tag Bregman, Bregman hops backwards, the ball comes out of the catcher's hands, Bregman makes a mad dash to first base as the catcher chases the ball. The catcher gets the ball then fires it to first base where it glances off Bregman's helmet slightly and the first baseman misses the ball as it goes past towards the right field foul territory. The Astro's runner on third waltzes in to home for the winning run. Game over.

What makes this even more sour for the A's is they went into the 9th behind 0-4, tied up the game and held the Astros to take the game into extra innings.

Bregman also hit 2 home runs earlier in the game

Last year Bregman hit a 10th inning walk off single in game 5 of the World Series.

Bregman walk-offs this year:
April 7: Bottom of 10th, infield fly
Jun 18: Bottom of 9th, double
Jun 27: Bottom of 9th, home run
July 10: Bottom of 11th, catcher's error

Paul Simon needs to update his song...

Just get a base hit, Britt
A line drive for two, Stu
When you see your pitch, Mitch
Don't hesitate

Put it out of the park, Clark
You won't need to discuss much
Just a sacrifice fly, Guy
Then y'all celebrate......

The As took the lead in the top of the 11th. Bregman's play was responsible for the second Astro run of the inning. --Bob

Bah. In my playing days, I once led off a game with a walk off grand slam.

But stay thirsty, my friend...
