On this day in 1804:

Weehawken.

Dawn.

Guns.

Drawn.

Vice President Aaron Burr fatally shoots Alexander Hamilton in a duel.

Someone should make a musical about him.

Yep, no wonder the cast was so upset when Pence was there. Hamilton has an understandable fear of Vice Presidents.

Vandal thus wins the prize for the most belated RIP notice ever, beating the previous winner, the Leslie Nielsen obit notice, which was posted a mere four years after Nielsen's death.

Somehow, I don't think this record will be broken.

Hamilton is not the first famous person to die. I'm sure someone can beat this.

Sen. Angus King marked the occasion by recounting this story:
VillageSoup wrote:King brought the house down with a story about a conversation he had after Intelligence Committee chairman Sen. Richard Burr (R) and vice chairman Sen. Mark Warner (D), held a joint press conference to assure the public the committee would get to the bottom of Russian interference issues.

King recalls that in appreciation of the bipartisan and positive nature of the press conference, he said to Burr, “Richard, that was a great press conference. You and Mark did a terrific job. It's important for the American people to be together on this. Like they say in Hamilton, 'History has it's eyes on you.'

And Richard took one step back, and said 'Angus, I don't know if you want to quote Hamilton to me, since my great, great grandfather shot him.' ”
Strictly speaking, their relationship is a bit more distant. According to Geni.com, Richard Burr's 11th great-grandfather is Aaron Burr's 4th great-grandfather. (They're all distantly related to Bob Juch.)

I have a problem with the Capt. William Anderson → Elizabeth (Anderson) Dabney link. I have no reputable source that the are the same people I already have in my tree. Others have them with widely different dates.

Since Geni family trees are a combination of many peoples' inputs, mistakes creep in and you have to double-check facts.

Of course, in this case, there's no consensus and no written source.
