Game #184: Do You Hear the People Sing?

Identify the 100 songs below. Then, match them into 50 pairs according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. No song will be used twice.

Yes, alternate pairs are not only possible, they are probable. But I think you’ll have no trouble working out the best – or, at least, the funnest – matches.

1. You say you're lookin' for someone
Never weak but always strong,
To protect you and defend you
Whether you are right or wrong.

2. Am I happy or in misery?
Whatever it is, that girl put a spell on me.

3. You know you love me, I know you care.
Just shout whenever and I'll be there.
You are my love, you are my heart
And we will never, ever, ever be apart.

4. I see your face before me as I lay on my bed.
I kinda get to thinking of all the things you said.
You gave your promise to me, and I gave mine to you.
I need someone beside me in everything I do.

5. I never got a chance to see him,
Never heard nothin' but bad things about him.
Mama, I'm depending on you
To tell me the truth.

6. She saves her lovin', early in the mornin'
Just for me, oh yeah.
She saves her lovin', early in the mornin'
Just for me, oh yeah.
She saves her lovin', just for me.
Ah, she, loves me, so tenderly.

7. I want you, girl, but your wide-eyed innocence
Has really messed up my mind, yeah.
I'd rather you get your very first heartbreak
Somewhere else along the line.

8. If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on, now,
Cause there's too many places I've got to see.

9. What's the use in tryin'?
All you get is pain.
When I wanted sunshine I got rain.

10. Everybody searching for a hero,
People need someone to look up to.
I never found anyone to fulfill my needs.
A lonely place to be
And so I learned to depend on me.

11. I've got my saddle
On my horse.
He's called T-t-t-t-t-trigger,
Of course.

12. Oh, and, babe, I'm fist-fighting with fire
Just to get close to you.
Can we burn something, babe?
And I'll run for miles just to get a taste.

13. They think that I'm a rover,
But my rovin' days are over.
Someday your folks will welcome me.
I went away a small man,
But I'll come home a tall man,
Then what a pretty bride you'll be.

14. When you dance you're charming and you're gentle,
Especially when you do the Continental,
But this feeling isn't purely mental
For heaven rest us
I'm not asbestos.

15. Turning me on, turning me off,
Making me feel like I want too much,
Living with you's just a-putting me through it all of the time.

16. And being apart ain't easy on this love affair.
Two strangers learn to fall in love again.
I get the joy of rediscovering you.

17. Rooster hits the washboard and people just got to smile,
Blinky thumps the gut bass and solos for a while.

18. It's not too cool to be ridiculed
But you brought this upon yourself.
The world is tired of pacifiers,
We want the truth and nothing else.

19. Well, every woman should try to be
Whatever her man wants her to be,
And I don't want much, all I want from you
Is for you to be true to me.

20. They took the credit for your second symphony,
Rewritten by machine on new technology,
And now I understand the problems you can see.

21. Many guys have come to you
With a line that wasn't true
And you passed them by. (Passed them by.)
Now you're in the center ring
And their lines don't mean a thing.
Why don't you let me try? (Let me try.)

22. In the crowd of a million people
I'll find my valentine,
Then I'll climb to the highest steeple
And tell the world he's mine.

23. If the real thing don't do the trick
You better make up something quick,
You gonna burn, burn, burn, burn, burn to the wick.

24. I've cried and prayed to the Lord
To send you back my love,
But instead you came to me,
But only in my dreams.

25. This one way love affair ain't fair, it ain't fair to me,
It's all give and take and you just take.
I can't take it, you see.
Well, I'm givin' up on love this time,
Me and my friends, we'll do just fine.

26. I’m shouting all about love
While they treated you like a dog.

27. I was taken to a place,
The hall of the mountain king,
I stood high on the mountain top
Naked to the world
In front of
Every kind of girl.

28. I've never seen a night so long,
When time goes crawling by.
The moon just went behind the clouds
To hide its face and cry.

29. I wish I could just make you turn around,
Turn around and see me cry.
There's so much I need to say to you,
So many reasons why.

30. I don't care about your karma,
I don't care about what's hip,
No space cadet's gonna tell me what to do.
I won't swim in your Jacuzzi,
You can't make me settle down.
I'd rather kick and jump and bite and scratch
And scream until I'm blue.

31. I'll give her all the love I have to give
As long as we both shall live.

32. You already made up your mind
Just who you're looking for
And what kind of love you'll find.
Holding out for a dream,
But I can see you're lonely.
Living isn't only a fantasy.

33. Once, on a high and windy hill,
In the morning mist
Two lovers kissed
And the world stood still.

34. So I got my boots on,
Got the right amount of leather,
And I'm doing me up with a black color liner,
And I'm working my strut, but I know it don't matter
All we need in this world is some love.

35. See the happy couples strolling through the park,
Swinging hands as they go by.
We know they feel the way we feel
And we also know the reason why.

36. All my friends call me a fool.
They say let the woman take care of you.
So I try to be hip and think like the crowd,
But even the crowd can't help me now.

37. I hear it from my friends,
I hear it on the street,
I hear it in the air here and there,
Everywhere and from everyone I meet.

38. Hey, sexy lady,
Said I like the way you move your thang,
Lord have mercy, girl,
You dance so fine, and you're right on time.

39. There you were, I fell on the floor,
The way you move, girl, only made me want you more.
I did not know you had me hypnotized,
There's a movement of your body dancin' in my eyes.

40. You ain't got no kind of feeling inside.
I got something that will sure 'nuff set your stuff on fire.
You refuse to put anything before your pride.
Well, I got something will knock all your pride aside.

41. The soldier blues were trapped on a hillside,
The battle ragin' all around.
The sergeant cried "We've gotta hang on, boys,
We gotta hold this piece of ground.”

42. Lotta people have an ego hang-up
'Cause they want to be the only one.
How many came before, it really doesn't matter
Just as long as you're the last.
Everybody's moving on and trying to find out
What's been missing in the past.

43. Underneath the starlight, starlight,
There's a magical feeling, so right
It'll steal your heart tonight.

44. I'm gonna write words, oh, so sweet,
They're gonna knock me off my feet.
A lotta kisses at the bottom,
I'll be glad I got 'em.

45. So if I call you,
Don't make a fuss,
Don't tell your friends about the two of us.

46. See the marketplace in old Algiers.
Send me photographs and souvenirs.

47. Bet you got a good gun
Bet you know how,
To have some fun and then
You turn it around on me
Because I'm better than the rest of the men.

48. I'm getting paid by the hour and older by the minute,
My boss just pushed me over the limit.
I'd love to call him something, but I think I'll just call it a day.

49. The Sheik, he drove his Cadillac,
He went a' cruisin' down the ville.
The muezzin was a-standing
On the radiator grille.

50. You see, I wanted her real bad and I was about to give in,
That's when she started talking about true love, started talking about sin.

51. Once I was a hollow man
In which a lonely heart did dwell,
Then love came sneaking up on me,
Bringing hope to an empty shell.

52. Oh, listen (listen to me when I'm speaking cause you know the words I'm thinking)
To what I've gotta say (and I know that you've been cheating, oh, I hope that that we'll be meeting)
Girl, I still love you (ooo, I still love you)
I'll always love you (ooo, I'll always love you)
Anyway
Anyway
Anyway

53. Out of work, I'm out of my head,
Out of self-respect, I'm out of bread,
I'm underloved, I'm underfed,
I want to go home.

54. You don't know
The pain that I feel.
You've taken my love for granted
And you just wanna see it your way.

55. Oh, one night I saw them kissing at a party,
So I kissed some other guy.
Johnny jumped up and he hit him
'Cause he still loved me, that's why.

56. My buddies and me are getting real well known.
Yeah, the bad guys know us and they leave us alone.

57. Lying here next to you
Time just seems to fly.
Needing you more and more,
Let’s give love a try.

58. I need a photo opportunity,
I want a shot at redemption,
Don't want to end up a cartoon
In a cartoon graveyard.

59. Always something happening and nothing going on,
There's always something cooking and nothing in the pot,
They're starving back in China, so finish what you got.

60. Coming over the airwaves
The man says I'm overdue.
Sing along, send some money,
Join the chosen few.
Well, Mister, I'm not in a hurry
And I don't want to be like you,

61. If only you could see the dreams that seem to mean so much to me
Then you'd know the reason why
I would love to say "I do"
Then say “Goodbye.”

62. Now in the unemployment lines
You can spend your life readin' signs,
Waitin' for your interview,
They can shoot the whole day for you.

63. Been away,
Haven't seen you in a while.
How've you been?
Have you changed your style?

64. Well, come on, baby, I love you so
I will never, never let you go.
Come on, baby, will you treat me nice?
Please don't put my love on ice.

65. Kinda like the monkey,
Kinda like the twist,
Pretend you're in the water
And you go like this.

66. I practice every day to find some clever lines to say
To make the meaning come through,
But then I think I'll wait until the evening gets late
And I'm alone with you.

67. Give me one kiss and I'll be happy
Just, just to be with you.

68. Do you seeing that thing swimming round and round?
Maybe we could be reaching in and make it drown.
If we're sneakin' up upon it carefully
There will be some fish for you and some for me.

69. That's how it is in my world, girl,
You're with me all the time.
Why don't you come into my world and leave your world behind?

70. You're one of those guys who likes to shine his machine,
You make me take off my shoes before you let me get in.
I can't believe you kiss your car good night.
Now, c'mon, baby, tell me. You must be jokin', right?

71. We gotta be extra careful
That do we don't build our hopes up too high,
Because she's got her own obligations
And so, and so, do I.

72. I'm through with romance, I'm through with love,
I'm through with countin' the stars above,
And here's the reason that I'm so free:
My lovin' baby is through with me.

73. All my thoughts just seem to settle on the breeze
When I'm lying wrapped up in your arms.
The whole world just fades away,
The only thing I hear
Is the beating of your heart.

74. They told me "Be sensible with your new love,
"Don't be fooled, thinking this is the last you'll find."
But they never stood in the dark with you, love,
When you take me in your arms
And drive me slowly out of my mind.

75. Oh, nothing is as sad as it seems, you know
'Cause someday you'll laugh at the heartache,
Someday you'll laugh at the pain,
Somehow you'll get through the heartache,
Somehow you can get through the rain.

76. When you are near me like this
You're much too hard to resist.

77. How you ain't gone f**k?. Bitch, I'm me
I'm the goddamn reason you in V.I.P.
CEO, you don’t have to see ID.
I’m young, wild, and strapped like Chi-Ali.

78. I'm in way over my head,
Now she thinks that I love her,
Because that's what I said
Though I never think of her.

79. If I had a dime for every time I held you,
Though you're far away, you've been so close to me,
I could swear I'd be the richest girl in Nashville,
Maybe even in the state of Tennessee.

80. Gonna find me somebody
Not afraid to let go.
Want a no-doubt, be-there kind of man.
You came real close.

81. It's Friday and I'm ready to swing,
Pick up my girls and hit the party scene,
Tonight, oh, it's alright.
So get up and let this funky mellow groove.

82. You can tell I'm educated, I studied at the Sorbonne,
Doctored in mathematics, I could have been a don.
I can program a computer, choose the perfect time.
If you've got the inclination, I have the crime.

83. I got married to the widow next door.
She's been married seven times before.

84. Why did I listen to my friends
When they told me what to do?
Yes, I still have my friends,
But I don't have you.

85. Oh, once in your life you find someone
Who will turn your world around,
Bring you up when you're feelin' down.

86. There were nights when the wind was so cold
That my body froze in bed if I just listened to it
Right outside the window.
There were days when the sun was so cruel
That all the tears turned to dust
And I just knew my eyes were drying up forever.

87. I’m blowin’ the day to take a walk in the sun
And fall on my face on somebody's new mowed lawn.

88. Go for a walk, say a little prayer,
Take a deep breath of mountain air,
Put on my glove and play some catch -
It's time that I make time for that.

89. Someone, someone's got me wrong.
You thought that your love was strong,
Now you're feelin' like such a fool.
Poor you, you're thinkin', maybe if you said goodbye
You'll understand the reason why
The love you had felt so cool.

90. You broke his heart and made him cry,
And he's been blue since then.
Now he's found somebody new,
And you want him back again.

91. The winds of change are always blowing
And every time I tried to stay
The winds of change continued blowing
And they just carried me a way.

92. They say that goin' steady is not the proper thing,
They say that we're too young to know the meaning of a ring.
I only know that I love you and that you love me, too,
So, darling, please do what I ask of you.

93. Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota,
Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota.

94. As time goes on, I realize
Just what you mean to me
And now, now that you're near,
Promise your love that I've waited to share.

95. I've waited so long, baby,
Now that we're friends.
Every man's got his patience
And here's where mine ends.

96. You always break the kindest heart
With a hasty word you can't recall,
So if I broke your heart last night,
It's because I love you most of all.

97. (So in love)
Ooh (So in love)
So in love (So in love)
With you (So in love)
Baby ooh (So in love)
Ooh (So in love)
So in love (So in love)
With you (So in love)
BREAK!

98. You can see the summit, but you can't reach it,
It's the last piece of the puzzle, but you just can't make it fit,
Doctor says you're cured, but you still feel the pain,
Aspirations in the clouds, but your hopes go down the drain.

99. From Mozambique to those Memphis nights,
The Khyber Pass to Vancouver's lights,
Knock me down, get back up again,
You're in my blood, I'm not a lonely man.

100. She said that living with me
Is bringing her down, yeah.
For she would never be free
When I was around.
