Fireball's Fantastic 500 -- Late 1980s, Part V

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Fri Aug 17, 2018 5:45 pm

We're into the home stretch of this decade now. Only three posts of the 1980s remain before we coast through the more recent songs.

#40. Forever Young, Rod Stewart (1988)

Yet another Rod Stewart song with religious overtones.

#39. Smooth Operator, Sade (1985)

#38. I Don't Wanna Go on with You Like That, Elton John (1988)

#37. Healing Hands, Elton John (1989)

Another double play from the Rocket Man, but this is also a double play for music video director Russell Mulcahy.

#36. We Built This City, Jefferson Starplane Starship (1985)

Both Blender and GQ magazines have claimed this as the worst pop song of all time. Both Blender and GQ can eat a bag of dicks. In fact, it was Blender's 2004 publication of its alleged fifty worst songs of all time that inspired me to publish my list of the real fifty worst songs of all time the following week--the update of which will be the list that you see at the end of this year. By extension, the ignorance of Blender and GQ is one of the reasons why I'm doing my Fantastic 500 series--an excuse to give Blender, GQ, and any other penny-ante music critic the middle finger by including "We Built This City" on the list of the best pop songs of all time.

#35. No One Is to Blame, Howard Jones (1986)

Pure coincidence this song pops up at the same time that it pops up in a Tangredi game. My lists were completely locked in on December 31, 2017.

#34. I Won't Back Down, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (1989)

While "We Built This City" can be considered my middle finger to Blender magazine, this song can be considered my middle finger to all of you selfish, stubborn, feckless C-words who think you can delegitimize me with your masturbatory lies and your racist slurs. Did I say "C-words"? I actually meant "Fundies", because C-words are important to society. And I did play a lot of this song and its star-studded video after Tom died suddenly last October.

#33. I Don't Want to Live Without You, Foreigner (1987)

Ironic title of Foreigner's final U.S. top ten hit before calling it quits.

#32. Lost in Emotion, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam (1987)

#31. Simply Irresistible, Robert Palmer (1988)

The title speaks for itself. This was essentially the same video as "Addicted to Love", but the women had more color, emotion, and rhythm in this one.

And that's it for me until Sunday, August 26. Those who follow me on Facebook already know that I am heading back to Virginia tomorrow morning. Javon's first classes at VSU are on Monday, and I'm going to surprise him by spending the next week with him. No, I'm not going to give him an upper hand in his opening week by helping him cheat. It's been 17 years since I last attended a secular college and chances are I will get lost in his advanced study material.
