538 on Voter ID

#1 Post by Bob78164 » Tue Aug 21, 2018 10:27 am

The takeaway from this story is clear. Voter ID (particularly strict Voter ID) is much more likely to prevent a minority citizen from voting than a non-minority citizen. --Bob

While voter ID laws can be politically neutral in theory, the ones passed by Republican legislatures always accept IDs common among Republicans and reject IDs that many Democrats use. I imagine that if Democrats wrote a photo ID law, it would accept Medicaid IDs but not hunting licenses. Like drawing voting districts, ID laws are easy to manipulate for partisan ends.

Then there are tricks like closing the DMV offices in majority Black areas.
