The NCAA has announced that they are abandoning the RPI index that they have used since 1981 to pick teams and seeds for the basketball tournament. Instead, they will use a new system called NET, effective this season. The NET places less of an emphasis on when games are played, so that games played earlier in the season carry equal weight. Also, wins and losses are capped at 10 points for the purposes of their calculations, so teams won't be able to gain an advantage by running up scores against bad opponents. NET rankings will be available from around the first of December each season and will be updated every day until Selection Sunday. The RPI will still be used in the women's tournament and in other sports.
