Trump could have chosen to do so if he wanted. He also could have issued an official proclamation if he wanted instead of merely a tweet that didn't recognize any of John McCain's achievements (followed by a number of tweets patting himself on the back for various things). He also could have reposted the tweet on Instagram with a picture of McCain or no picture at all instead of a large picture of himself.

He chose to do none of those things.

I posted the official proclamation after the condolence tweets.

Previous White House proclamations have honored Democratic Senator John Glenn and the victims of five horrific mass shootings. Admirably non-political.

After receiving lots of heat for this, Trump has now issued an order extending the half-mast period until after McCain's funeral. The statement from the White House:
"Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain’s service to our country and, in his honor, have signed a proclamation to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff until the day of his interment,"
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/pol ... 108717002/

Obama ordered flags at half-mast until the funeral for Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd, and Daniel Inouye, who were three of the four Senators to die while in office in his term, along with Justice Antonin Scalia.
