The worry isn't that they'll vote for the Democrat. The worry is that they'll sit out the election. Motivating the base is important in any election. It leads to increased donations, volunteering, politicking of friends and acquaintances, and a lot of other beneficial results. Republicans are very worried this year about just how motivated their base is (and I can get lots of sources on this if you don't believe me).
