I suggested the "come/go" thing early on, but it took me way too long to find the application.

Maybe these will spark something.

49. Flash Light/Parliament
*50. Livin' Thing/ELO

If we give ELO their full name, that's two LIGHTS in a row.

39. Knockin' on Heaven's Door/Bob Dylan
*40. Call Me/Blondie - sorta
*41. Knock on Wood/Eddie Floyd

Two KNOCKS separated by a distorted Call Me lyric.

Okay, I just started looking up early 80s discographies by 3-letter bands. ABC didn't work, but XTC yielded this:

22. Early 80's non-charting song by a three letter band
SENSES WORKING OVERTIME
*59. Listen to the Music/The Doobie Brothers
*60. Smells Like Teen Spirit/Nirvana
**61. Too Much Time on My Hands/Styx

Excellent!

It would sure help if a few other people were more actively playing this game. But....

19. The premier Southern rock act of the 21st Century

I am unaware of any other acts that would qualify under this genre that have been as commercially successful as this band has been in the 2000's. Someone knowledgeable in more recent music should know who this is...

28. The original version of this now well known early 80's song never charted, but a live version in 1986 barely cracked the Hot 100

This one seems out there for the taking. Maybe had I not gotten cute and used a song that accentuated the opposite relationship at work a little better....

31. Though this classic rock staple only peaked at #59, the group still didn't change the title

A classic rock junkie who knows how this game works should actually be looking for this song. I know TBone knows it...

35. Debut #2 hit by a very popular late 60's band

This one was actually inspired by us working on the solution to the previous lyrics game! Like "You Dropped a Bomb on Me," this one is very much a visual solution...

38. Top 5 hit from one of the most prodigious singers of the late 50's/early 60's

I'd have bet money this would be one of the last ones spotted. It's a well known song, but so generic and its solution doesn't really jump out...

19. The premier Southern rock act of the 21st Century

No one band jumps out at me, but here are some possibilities:

Kings of Leon
Allman Brothers
ZZ Top
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
.38 Special
Drive-By Truckers

That's brilliant, both the question and the solution! And now I can stop looking for some link between Wolves, Sharks, and Oysters.

I noticed that two of our unused clues were separated by two used clues. I think this must yield this:

19. The premier Southern rock act of the 21st Century
THREE DOORS DOWN
*66. In My House/Mary Jane Girls
*69. Here I Am/Al Green or UB40

Updated Consolidation

Here are the remaining unsolved clues, along with LB's most recent comments on them:
31. Though this classic rock staple only peaked at #59, the group still didn't change the title

A classic rock junkie who knows how this game works should actually be looking for this song. I know TBone knows it...

I'd have bet money this would be one of the last ones spotted. It's a well known song, but so generic and its solution doesn't really jump out...

That has to be right, although that song did not hit #2, according to my sources. It fits the clue in every other way.

Maybe the knocks are a red herring. How about NEXT DOOR TO AN ANGEL by Neil Sedaka?

BINGO!
So all we have left is this one:

31. Though this classic rock staple only peaked at #59, the group still didn't change the title
A classic rock junkie who knows how this game works should actually be looking for this song. I know TBone knows it...

A rabbit on one side and a hat on the other. One of the all-time classic magic tricks... so DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC by the Lovin' Spoonful, perhaps?
That has to be right, although that song did not hit #2, according to my sources. It fits the clue in every other way.

I knew there was no way I'd crafted an entire huge game like this without making a factual error! My bad, the solution is correct!

Could it be as simple as the song "Lights" by Journey? The chart positions don't match up very well on a cursory search, but it didn't hit the Top 40 when it was first released, and then a later live version was a minor success. Anyway, I thought "Still haven't found what I'm looking for" could be an oblique reference to a journey.

OK, I think I have it...to a degree...

Wracking my brain for classic rock artists, I eventually landed on Joe Walsh, whose first band, The James Gang, had a song called "Funk #49". I know that was a single that didn't crack the Top 40, although I don't know its peak position. Still, it would fit the clue about not changing the title (from 49 to 59, presumably), and would bring in song 49, "Flashlight" by Parliament, as Parliament is the very definition of a funk band.

Sooo...

James Gang, Funk #49
49. Flashlight-Parliament

If there's more to it, I dunno...
