Lyrically Speaking Special - Secret Agent Man

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Mon Sep 17, 2018 8:00 am

Those of you who've played the LSWE may remember my Merry M.... er, good friend _ARMENIAN_. You know, this guy...

Image

Yeah, you can't forget a face like that now, can you.... even if it isn't his best side. Anyway, he posted a few games over the years based on some of his spy experiences with The Organization... mainly because he needed outside help due to the fact that his cryptology skills were on the level that he couldn't even crack the combination to Mel Brooks' luggage. After numerous missions that ended with disastrous results due to his incompetence, _ARMENIAN_ was eventually assigned to the highly classified position of mailroom clerk. And so it was that one of his first assignments in his new role as office lackey was to infiltrate The Organization's top secret music library to retrieve a playlist for The Chief's personal deejay to play at the next big event (Surely you're familiar with the Party at the CIA?). Alas, our bumbling spy wannabe entered the vault only to find that The Organization even kept its huge collection of music coded.... of course it did. So.... think you could lend him a hand again before his next mission, which he'll have no choice but to accept, will be scrubbing the exploding toilets in the guest washroom?

Instructions:

Provide the title and artist to the following 100 sets of lyrics below. And then, using a principle that is in no way, shape or form strict and uniform (you'll see)... but that you must still discover for yourself (Code name: Tangredi), use the 100 songs below to solve the 51 clues on the playlist at the bottom of the game. Most of the clues are to song titles, but there are a few artists and album titles as well. Some of the clues you may be able to deduce the answer for simply from the information provided, but I want to know how it can be found in the game. Each of the 100 songs in the game provides at least one element to the answer to one of the 51 clues... there is no gratuitous music in this game.

Since this was an LSWE idea that got entirely too big to put in the next series, I've decided to post this as a game that can be worked out collaboratively like the Tangredi games. I invite all of my LSWE players to help out in solving this mystery. I think there are certain elements to the theme some of you will figure out pretty quickly... perhaps even as early as your first pass. There are some clues whose solution is somewhat easy to spot, but there's also quite a few that are much more cleverly hidden. And keep in mind... the theme is NOT universal! There are many different ways to find each of the 51 clue answers within this game!

Hopefully I didn't mess anything up (yeah, right). Good luck!

Music List Being Searched For (This list will self destruct in exactly 5437129047233 seconds):
4. 1988 #1 hit by a UK band who never charted in their home country -- initial instinct is Wild Wild West, Escape Club

9. 1986 song featured on a cop movie soundtrack -- probably something from Beverly Hills Cop
"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

"In times of crisis, the wise build bridges. The foolish build barriers." --Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020)

Good luck!

Just for the sake of clarity, the answers to the main game itself will not by themselves be the answer to any of the clue list songs. There will be a few clue songs that can be deduced from a single song in the main game... but it will never just be that song or artist title itself. Ergo, you are looking for a 70's Chicago song that wasn't one of the 100 above...

10. You give me a feeling in my heart
Like an arrow passin' through it
'spose that you think you're very smart
HOW DO YOU DO IT?/THE DAVE CLARK FIVE

Will look at solving some of the ones not yet identified when I have a bit more time, but noticed this and wanted to correct it before someone followed the trail too far. The hit version of this was by Gerry and the Pacemakers. The song was originally suggested to the Beatles by producer George Martin as the followup to Love Me Do. However, the lads hated it and wanted to record one of their own compositions instead. Martin said "Fine. If you can come up with a song as good as this one, we'll record that instead". They brought in Please Please Me, and the rest is history, as the song became their first British #1. It was a happy ending all around, though, as How Do You Do It was given to fellow Liverpudlians Gerry and the Pacemakers (also managed by Brian Epstein), and that, too, went to #1. The Beatles DID do a demo recording of How Do You Do It, which can be heard on The Beatles Anthology 1, and their lack of enthusiasm for the tune is pretty obvious.

This makes me wonder, though, about THIS clue:

25. This #2 hit is one of many songs that name drops the artist of the song in Clue 10

Off the top of my head, I can't think of ANY songs that name drop The Pacemakers, let alone "many", so I am guessing you are referring to The Beatles here.

This is why Frank does A's and B's when he has multiple lists, and why I should have done it as well (but was too lazy). When I use the word "Clue," I am referring to the bottom list of songs/artists/albums to be identified... so the artist referred to there is the artist who did the song that is the answer to #10 in the bottom list.

And I'm thinking Clue 10 references Bob Dylan, who is certainly name-dropped in a lot of songs, from Ricky Nelson to Hootie and the Blowfish.

Which would make the 1966 song referenced in Clue 10 "Rainy Day Women #12 and #35"...

FIRST CONSOLIDATION

Good luck!

Other than a single letter missing from both 63 and 64, the songs and relevant artists all appear to be correct here. And good job keeping the lyrics to #40... they may come in handy.

As for the answers to the clues... I'll withhold comment on them until the concept behind this puzzle is figured out. But I will say several of the guesses provided can already be definitively solved by what you have to work with....

As I said before, this is incorrect. The artist for the hit version is GERRY AND THE PACEMAKERS. The Dave Clark Five never recorded this, to my knowledge. The Beatles did a demo of it, which resurfaced many years later as part of the Anthology project.

This could also be Al Green, who did it originally. Seal did a fine cover recently as well, proving that it's a good tune no matter who does it.

UPDATED CONSOLIDATION

Good luck!

Well, it is certainly significant, then, that song #12 on the list is Rainy Days and Mondays and song #35 is It's Raining Men by the Weather Girls

And to think I was actually afraid the concept behind this game might be figured out right away and the game over with in a day or two!

I'll reiterate and/or clarify a few things a that may help you figure out what's going on here....

While there are a number of different ways to arrive at solutions to the clues from the puzzle songs, the basic concept behind the solutions themselves is uniform. And you may be overlooking it because it is too simple...

The solution being sought for each clue is only what is being asked for. If it is a song, the song title itself is the solution. Two of the clues seeking songs will involve the artist in the puzzle as well (and maybe another oddball or two), though you'll understand why that is once you know the fundamental concept this game is built around...

You all have already correctly guessed more of the clue answers off just the cryptic info I provided than I thought you would. Though they're not all correct, enough of them are that you might want to try seeking them out in the puzzle as well. Come up with enough "significant" songs from the A list that match to the B list, and I'm pretty sure the light bulb will eventually have to go off...

I looked up the lyrics to the last 3 songs so we can finish that first song list:

14. Let your arms, shelter me from all hurt and pain
Mmm, light my heart, with your everlasting flame
Ooh, mmm-mmm

ROCKIN' CHAIR-Gwen McCrae

24. While the Black bands sweatin'
And the rhythm rhymes rollin'
Got to give us what we want
Gotta give us what we need

FIGHT THE POWER-Public Enemy

66. And when you feel sad and blue
You just come and see me anytime
I'll be waitin for you dear
And your fears you can leave behind

IN MY HOUSE-Mary Jane Girls

Also, I had an idea about one of the clues in that second song list:

50. A 70's Chicago song

Could this be "Questions 67 & 68"? Songs 67 & 68 ask a question ("Is She Really Going Out With Him?" & "Who Can It Be Now?"). It might not be it because even though it was released as a single in 1971, the song came out in 1969.

Esto brought up in a post that a couple of songs had the wrong lyrics. Maybe this is the reason why the lyrics are wrong in Song #40. Here are the correct lyrics to that song:

40. Cover me with smooches (kisses), baby
Cover me with dirt (love)
Roll me in designer dresses (sheets)
I'll never get enough
Emoticons (Emotions) come, I don't know why
Cover up love's lullaby (alibi)
