Fireball's Fantastic 500 -- Early 1990s, Part VII

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Sun Oct 28, 2018 2:59 pm

After a very hectic weekend, it's finally time to put an end to the first part of the 1990s.

#10. Fading Like a Flower (Every Time You Leave), Roxette (1991)

#9. Come Undone, Duran Duran (1993)

The last US Top 10 hit for the Double Ds, and the follow-up to their #3 hit "Ordinary World".

#8. Stars, Simply Red (1991)

I'll bet you didn't know that Simply Red had a US hit in the 1990s. They had two, in fact. "Something Got Me Started" peaked at #23 immediately before this single was released. While this single only got up to #44 on the Hot 100, it got as high as #8 on the AC chart. It truly is a beautiful song.

#7. Practice What You Preach, Barry White (1994)

After sixteen years off of the pop charts, Barry came back better than ever with this Top 20 hit. This song didn't have nearly the same energy as Barry's hits from the 1970s, but that can be attested to what we now know about his litany of health problems during the last decade of his life.

#6. All My Life, Linda Ronstadt & Aaron Neville (1990)

Linda & Aaron do it again. One year after "Don't Know Much" blazed the airwaves, this song also entered heavy rotation on the pop stations. Sadly, this would mark Linda's last appearance in the Top 40.

#5. Don't Take Away My Heaven, Aaron Neville (1994)

Here's Aaron without Linda. This is the highest-ranked Diane Warren song in my overall countdown.

#4. Diamonds and Pearls, Prince & the New Power Generation (1992)

#3. Again, Janet Jackson (1993)

The #1 Oscar-nominated hit from the film Poetic Justice, in which Janet co-starred with Tupac Shakur.

#2. Tears in Heaven, Eric Clapton (1992)

One of the most painful songs ever recorded... but what a brilliant song it is. Obviously, I can relate to Eric because we both lost young children. This was the only song I heard in my heard during the weeks after my oldest son was murdered 13 years ago. While it always brings up a lot of terrible memories, it also gives me solace that there will be no memories of terrible things like murder or Donald Drumpf in Heaven.

*drumroll*

And here comes my all-time favorite song of the early 1990s...

#1. Nick of Time, Bonnie Raitt (1990)

The title track from the album that made Bonnie a household name.

And that's all for another era in music history! On Friday, we'll start my countdown of favorites from the rest of the 1990s. As I alluded several weeks ago, it'll be a pretty short list.
"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

"In times of crisis, the wise build bridges. The foolish build barriers." --Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020)
