The 24 Lions Project

25 years ago, at the close of the Mozambique civil war, Zambeze Delta Safaris and a couple of other operators bought hunting concessions in the Zambezi River Delta area. The wildlife was essentially gone at that point. It went into the cooking pots in the war. I have even seen that the buffalo were machine gunned from helicopters and went to feed Soviet freighter crews.

Since that time, through using hunting money they have worked with the local communities and funded anti-poaching activities to the extent that the game populations have increased exponentially.

It is probably the best place to hunt in Africa now-and it has been rebuilt from NOTHING using NOTHING but hunting dollars.

They are ready for the next step and are bringing in lions. These won't be hunted, except maybe in the distant future , if and when, the population is fully recovered.

This is 2.5 million wild acres added to lion habitat, which simply doesn't happen these days. I had seen earlier discussions that lions won't get there on their own because the Zambezi Delta area is largely surrounded by settled areas-altho, looking at the 24 Lions website-it appears that a young wandering male showed up on his own and paired up with one of the 24 lions-which is really cool.

In the category of-The world is still larger than we think. I have seen a discussion of eland (a large antelope) in the delta area and that they disappear for several months and nobody knows where we go.

I donate money to very few places, but I just sent 24 Lions a small donation. They are my kind of people.
