Fireball's Fantastic 500 -- 2010s, Part I

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Fri Dec 07, 2018 11:03 am

The results of the Rap Godz contest have not been released yet, so my future on the Bored remains in limbo.

Now let's get to my last chapter of the Fantastic 500. The current decade. This can hardly be called a list full of obscure songs, even to baby boomers. Most of these songs have emerged elsewhere in pop culture. Furthermore, the YouTube videos that comprise this list have received a combined worldwide total of 17 billion hits, give or take a few million. Even the least popular song of this section has still gotten over 12 million hits, and seven of the upcoming videos have already crossed the 1 billion hit mark (as of this post). This list also includes two Oscar-winning acts and four people who may be Oscar nominees in 2019.

Let's actually start the festivities with an Honorable Mention--a song that just got a Golden Globe nomination yesterday and could be among the Best Original Song nominees at the Academy Awards.

All the Stars, Kendrick Lamar f/ SZA (2018)

Since I already locked in my Fantastic 500 at the end of 2017, I couldn't officially include any songs from this year. If I could, though, I would include this one. This was the closing theme to a little film you might have heard of called Black Panther, Marvel's first box office blockbuster of 2018. I saw this movie at the theater twice--once on opening weekend with my little brother, and the second time on the following weekend with all of my sons. First and only time I've paid to go to a physical theater to see a movie twice. Only time so far, as I will almost certainly see the Black Panther sequel twice. Kendrick Lamar has stated several times over the past year that he wants to appear in the sequel as a villain.

Now on with the official countdown!

#23. Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.), Katy Perry (2011)

OK, I had to have one guilty pleasure in my Top 500. I can't help it. This is such a fun song with a fun video. Kenny G, Debbie Gibson, and Corey Feldman all have cameos here.

#18. Domino, Jessie J (2011)

#17. Praying, Kesha (2017)

One of the prominent faces of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, Kesha poured her heart out in her comeback single.

#16. Somebody That I Used to Know, Gotye f/ Kimbra (2012)

Grammy-winning #1 hit from somebody that we used to know.

#15. Misery, Maroon 5 (2010)

#14. The Edge of Glory, Lady Gaga (2011)

The star of the hit re-remake of A Star Is Born could be a double Oscar nominee in a few weeks--for Best Actress and Best Original Song. I know that Cher has worn a lot of outlandish gowns at previous Oscar ceremonies. Lady Gaga could easily rival them.

#13. Young Dumb & Broke, Khalid (2017)

#12. Uptown Funk!, Mark Ronson f/ Bruno Mars (2014)

Of the 500 songs on my list, this is unquestionably the most popular one of all time. Not only did this song spend an incredible 14 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100, but the video has been seen over 3.3 billion times on YouTube. Ronson is also a potential Oscar nominee for co-writing "Shallow" with Lady Gaga.

489 songs down, 11 songs to go. The final edition of the Fantastic 500 will be coming your way next Friday.
