It sounds like as soon as Der Spiegel heard credible allegations that he was making stuff up, they immediately investigated and when they determined the allegations were true, they fired him and made the deception public. It's a damn shame it took so long and the people of Fergus Falls could likely have accelerated that result if they had chosen to focus more quickly on rebutting his obvious falsehoods, but I'm not sure what Der Speigel could or should have done differently. --Bob
