The effect in Seattle of increasing minimum wage

#1 Post by Bob78164 » Mon Dec 31, 2018 9:02 pm

Many conservative economists argued that Seattle was committing economic suicide by increasing its minimum wage to $15.00 per hour. (Even higher for companies with more than 500 employees.) They explicitly predicted that employment in the restaurant industry would go down. They were wrong. But I won't hold my breath until most of them admit they were wrong, or until most of them refrain from breaking out the same refuted arguments the next time a jurisdiction wants to raise its minimum wage. --Bob

A little closer to home, the current (2018) minimum wage has only reached its scheduled increase to $10.50/$11 until tomorrow ($11/$12).

No facts in that article. Just some predictions from a former Republican Assemblyman whose views have been roundly rejected by the people of California because Republican predictions continue to fail to come true. Republicans thought that the tax increase we passed in 2012 (if memory serves) would be economic suicide. Instead, we've grown to become the world's fifth largest economy, surpassing that of the United Kingdom.

In the meantime, despite this guy's prediction that California's tax and regulatory climate is hostile to small businesses, small business creation in California remains the highest in the nation. --Bob
