Lyrically Speaking - 1/22/19

#1 Post by Evil Raccoon » Tue Jan 22, 2019 7:43 am

Well, who else did you expect to follow up Evil Squirrel? Yes, it is I, the evil but lovable raccoon who will host this week's Tuesday Wordplay game. Every song's got a word in common in the title... you know the drill. Someone wanna scritch me while I finish off this dead possum I found in Holly's trash can? Is today Raccoon Appreciation Day? No? Well, that fucking sucks...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. You know I work all day
To get you money to buy you things.

2. We were so in love you and me
On the boulevard wild and free
Giving all we got, we laid it down
Taking every shot, we took the town

3. I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine

4. Well, our hearts beat like thunder
I don't know why they don't explode
You got your hands in my back pockets
And Sam Cooke's singin' on the radio

5. We went streaking in the park
Skinny dipping in the dark
Then had a ménage à trois

6. You say that you're at home when you phone me
And how much you really care
Though you keep telling me that you're lonely
I'll know if someone is there

7. You need the evening action,
a place to dine, a glass of wine,
a little late romance.
It's a chain reaction.
You'll see the people of the world
coming out to dance.

8. Must be the gypsy in their soul
They have a need to rock and roll
They always will, they're out there still

9. Oh-- I won't talk about the past
How love's supposed to last forever
And you -- Don't have to take a stand
Lay out any plans

10. My brother Bill and my other brother Jack,
Belly full of beer and a possum in a sack,
Fifteen kids in the front porch light

11. We like a longneck and a good old song.
Turn it up and then we'll sing along. Sing along.

12. She's just sixteen years old
Leave her alone, they say
Separated by fools
Who don't know what love is yet

Lord, I wanted to go with "Hot Summer Nights" by Night for a double-dip...but that pesky "s" puts the kibosh on that one.

So, instead, we will go with one that was, well, a bit more personal back in the day, and that is all I'm gonna say about that:

The end-of-the-day sign-off (back when there was such a thing, probably early '80s) from our local TV station - Channel 7, featuring mascot Sir Seven:

...which was a whole lot less frightening than what they used back in the '50s - the station's early ID cards had a very Gothic theme, which scared the living bejeezus out of this little kid at the time. Try going to bed with this image burned into your mind, just before the screen cut to loud static...

They have a need to rock and roll
They always will, they're out there still

9. Oh-- I won't talk about the past
How love's supposed to last forever
And you -- Don't have to take a stand
Lay out any plans

Cool Night - Paul Davis

10. My brother Bill and my other brother Jack,
Belly full of beer and a possum in a sack,
Fifteen kids in the front porch light

Louisiana Saturday Night - Mel McDaniel

No shit...before my comments on Joe DIffie turned too long, I was going to compare him as being the 90s version to Mel McDaniel's 80s version. So I've been humming Mel McDaniel all week, although I'm more partial to Hello Darling and Good Morning Daddy. Have you ever even used McDaniel before? I'm sure I did on one of my C&W days...

Turn it up and then we'll sing along. Sing along.

All Night Long - Joe Walsh

Leave her alone, they say
Separated by fools
Who don't know what love is yet

1. You know I work all day
To get you money to buy you things.

A Hard Day's Night, The Beatles

2. We were so in love you and me
On the boulevard wild and free
Giving all we got, we laid it down
Taking every shot, we took the town

3. I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine

4. Well, our hearts beat like thunder
I don't know why they don't explode
You got your hands in my back pockets
And Sam Cooke's singin' on the radio

5. We went streaking in the park
Skinny dipping in the dark
Then had a ménage à trois

6. You say that you're at home when you phone me
And how much you really care
Though you keep telling me that you're lonely
I'll know if someone is there

Both me and Wiki know this one. It is A Hard Day's Night by the Beadles. This is a song the Sirius people play a lot in my mom's car. We all sing along.

We don't have another song to help us know the magic word, but there are only four choices, right? (Nobody would make "A" into a magic word, would they?) We went eeny-meeny and ended on moe, so Wiki found this picture for "Night." That's not Wiki in the picture, it's a wolf. Close enough. Besides, according to ancestry DNA tests, we both are 1,024th wolf. (Okay, that's a joke. If anybody tried to swab Wiki's mouth to get a DNA sample, she would eat the Q-tip.)

Apparently a subtheme of this game was pairs. We had a pair of lunar eclipses, a pair of Van Gogh paintings (one of them Photoshopped), two crappy directors (What a twist!), two howling wolves and even a couple bottles of hooch. Looking for a lone wolf (no pun intended), I decided to award the IBB to AD since I've always been a night owl (not one LRB was singing about) and remember quite the days of TV stations signing off in the 80's. It always had a kind of uncanny valley feeling to it... even disregarding Poltergeist. This also keeps the streak alive of a different IBB winner each day of the LSWE! I love sharing...

Hey! I love all God's creatures, except mangy rodents and mosquitoes.

The thought of Bob and fortified wine just didn't compute, so I checked his picture and it all made sense. Damn the bottle alone probably cost more than a case of the ol' Evening Express...

Since I'd never heard of it, I actually looked it up. Come to find out, that's the name of a packaging marketer! Yep, Bob ain't gettin' drunk on that.....ha!
