Lyrically Speaking - 1/25/19

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Jan 25, 2019 9:34 am

I'm a slacker. I didn't come up with a game beforehand, and couldn't come up with one even with the pressure of a self imposed deadline. So here's a game I ripped from the very first year of the LSWE way back in 2008 when a lot of you weren't even playing yet! I only changed out one song since I've already used it this year. And I added an Image Bonus, of course. It's also a super easy theme game since you deserve a reward for my incompetence...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 3 points for the super easy theme...

1. I'm not your lover
I'm not your friend
I am something that you'll never comprehend

2. Goodbye Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family

3. Is there any just cause for feeling like this
On the surface I'm a name on a list
I try to be discreet, but then blow it again

4. What does it matter to ya?
When you gotta job to do
You gotta do it well
You gotta give the other fellow hell

5. I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style.
And so I came to see him to listen for a while.
And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes

6. Here I go,
Hey Hey!
Here comes the devil,
Right Behind.

7. The street was deserted late Friday night
We were buggin' each other while we sat out the light
We both popped the clutch when the light turned green
You shoulda heard the whine from my screamin' machine

8. Look at him working, darning his socks
in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care

9. Well, when I woke up, the rain was pourin' down.
There were people standing all around.
Something warm running in my eyes,
but I found my baby somehow that night

10. Crossin' the highway late last night,
He shoulda looked left and he shoulda looked right,
He didn't see the station wagon, car

11. If you believe in forever,
Then life is just a one-night stand.

12. You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense

Super easy theme?

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that fits the theme of today's (eleven years ago's) theme.

Image Bonus: If you know the super easy theme, show me a fitting image.

[quote="littlebeast13"]I'm a slacker. So true. So true again. We deserve rewards all the time.

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 3 points for the super easy theme...

"Super easy" translates into "Sprots has no hope of getting this."

1. I'm not your lover
I'm not your friend
I am something that you'll never comprehend

I probably could get this in two days, but it's not happening. I'll just whine and move on.

2. Goodbye Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
We had joy, we had fun, we had

Seasons in the Sun, Terry Jacks

3. Is there any just cause for feeling like this
On the surface I'm a name on a list
I try to be discreet, but then blow it again

I died in your arms tonight. Can't get the artist, but I'm starting to notice a trend in the theme . . .

4. What does it matter to ya?
When you gotta job to do
You gotta do it well
You gotta give the other fellow hell

Live and Let Die, Paul McCartney. Lotta dying going on around here . . .

5. I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style.
And so I came to see him to listen for a while.
And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes

Killing me softly, Aretha Franklin

6. Here I go,
Hey Hey!
Here comes the devil,
Right Behind.

And when I die, Blood, Sweat, and Tears. This was the last record I ever purchased. This is one of the songs that when it comes on the radio, which is rare, I turn it up and sing along. You may recall my Triple Stumper post; SteelersFan isn't impressed with my singing either.

7. The street was deserted late Friday night
We were buggin' each other while we sat out the light
We both popped the clutch when the light turned green
You shoulda heard the whine from my screamin' machine

Dead Man's Curve, Jan and Dean

8. Look at him working, darning his socks
in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care

Eleanor Rigby, Beatles. I clicked on some click bait and found a ranked list of every Beatles song ever released. Eleanor Rigby is my favorite and was ranked #13. I can't say I agreed with all his choices and think that Eleanor Rigby shoulda been in the Top Ten. Sorta like my LS ranking.

9. Well, when I woke up, the rain was pourin' down.
There were people standing all around.
Something warm running in my eyes,
but I found my baby somehow that night
Oh where or where can my baby be
The Lord took her away from me.
She's gone to Heaven so I got to be good
So I can meet my baby when I leave
this world. I had the whole thing by heart at one time. We musta had a particularly bloodthirsty RadioDude when this was popular.

Last Kiss, J. Frank Wilson.

10. Crossin' the highway late last night,
He shoulda looked left and he shoulda looked right,
He didn't see the station wagon, car

This sounds like it should be the dead possum song, but it isn't. Onward.

11. If you believe in forever,
Then life is just a one-night stand.
If there's a rock and roll heaven
You know they got a helluva band.

Rock and Roll Heaven

12. You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense

In the Living Years, Mike and the Mechanics. Great song. Next to Eleanor Rigby, the best song here.

Super easy theme?

Death

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that fits the theme of today's (eleven years ago's) theme.

Daniel, Elton John

Image Bonus: If you know the super easy theme, show me a fitting image.

Spoiler
Both Wiki and me got this one right away. It's one of our favorite riding-around songs from the Beatles.

#8 is Eleanor Rigby.

Neither of us is sure about the theme. Wiki thinks it might be either "leaving your face in a jar by the door" or "all the lonely people." I let her decide, and she decided that the pictures of faces in jars were too scary. She went with lonely.

https://www.shutterstock.com/image-phot ... 3r9Bqg-2-4

It was that or a picture of a T-shirt that said, "Cat hair is lonely people glitter." I thought that was sad. Dog hair is just as glittery, and sometimes there's a lot more of it!

Edited to add the spoiler.

Spoiler

I Would Die 4 U - Prince

2. Goodbye Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family

Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks

3. Is there any just cause for feeling like this
On the surface I'm a name on a list
I try to be discreet, but then blow it again

(I Just) Died in Your Arms - Cutting Crew

4. What does it matter to ya?
When you gotta job to do
You gotta do it well
You gotta give the other fellow hell

Live and Let Die - Paul McCartney & Wings

5. I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style.
And so I came to see him to listen for a while.
And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes

Killing Me Softly with His Song - Roberta Flack

6. Here I go,
Hey Hey!
Here comes the devil,
Right Behind.

And When I Die - BS&T

7. The street was deserted late Friday night
We were buggin' each other while we sat out the light
We both popped the clutch when the light turned green
You shoulda heard the whine from my screamin' machine

Dead Man's Curve - Jan and Dean

8. Look at him working, darning his socks
in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care

Eleanor Rigby - Beatles

9. Well, when I woke up, the rain was pourin' down.
There were people standing all around.
Something warm running in my eyes,
but I found my baby somehow that night

10. Crossin' the highway late last night,
He shoulda looked left and he shoulda looked right,
He didn't see the station wagon, car

11. If you believe in forever,
Then life is just a one-night stand.

Rock and Roll Heaven - The Righteous Brothers

12. You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense

The Living Years - Mike + The Mechanics

Super easy theme?

Death/Dying

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that fits the theme of today's (eleven years ago's) theme.

Keep Me in Your Heart - Warren Zevon (WOW! I never realized there were so many songs to choose from for this theme. You could easily do a different 12 with very popular songs!)

Image Bonus: If you know the super easy theme, show me a fitting image.

1. I'm not your lover
I'm not your friend
I am something that you'll never comprehend

I Would Die For You - Prince

Yes, he's a musical genius, but I still ain't down with all of the numbers and whatnot. Words have letters instead of numbers for a reason and if we wasted all of those extra Us, I wouldn't have any to stick into words that do perfectly well without them...

2. Goodbye Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family

Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks

3. Is there any just cause for feeling like this
On the surface I'm a name on a list
I try to be discreet, but then blow it again

I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight - Cutting Crew

Did I get the macabre theme (which I love) as fast last time? Are you going to make me look this up or will you post the comparative scores?

4. What does it matter to ya?
When you gotta job to do
You gotta do it well
You gotta give the other fellow hell

Live and Let Die - Guns 'n Roses

YES, dammit, Guns 'n Roses!!!!1

5. I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style.
And so I came to see him to listen for a while.
And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes

KIlling Me Softly - Robert Flack

One time.... I'm sure I talked all about Wyclef and Pras last time and I'm in a time crunch, so I'll let it go...

6. Here I go,
Hey Hey!
Here comes the devil,
Right Behind.

When I Die - Blood, Sweat Tears and Winston Churchill

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.... Also I heard Rock and Roll Fantasy on the way home Saturday night and had to get that out of my head first...

7. The street was deserted late Friday night
We were buggin' each other while we sat out the light
We both popped the clutch when the light turned green
You shoulda heard the whine from my screamin' machine

Deadman's Curve - Jan and Dean

Insert obligatory Beach Boys joke here

8. Look at him working, darning his socks
in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care

Eleanor Rigby - Beatles

9. Well, when I woke up, the rain was pourin' down.
There were people standing all around.
Something warm running in my eyes,
but I found my baby somehow that night

Last Kiss - J Frank Wilson and the LeBron-less Saps

10. Crossin' the highway late last night,
He shoulda looked left and he shoulda looked right,
He didn't see the station wagon, car

Dammit, I know this so give me the points and nobody gets hurt (much) - Early Bird and the Four in the Mornings

11. If you believe in forever,
Then life is just a one-night stand.

Rock and Roll Heaven - Righteous Brothers

12. You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense

Super easy theme?

Dying to be loved

I was washing dishes the other day and thinking about that fucking Scotty and how even Honey would have been better and then started singing tragedy songs all day...

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that fits the theme of today's (eleven years ago's) theme.

I Love the Dead - Alice Cooper Group

Which one did I use last time? I'm betting on Austin Roberts...

Image Bonus: If you know the super easy theme, show me a fitting image.

This could get icky, so you're a better man than I am for braving the IBs (ha, IBS....) on this one. So I'll go classy instead (which will knock me right on out of the IBB...ha!

Image

I used to have a framed print of this that got packed up when I moved 15 years ago....and it still hasn't surfaced.

1. I'm not your lover
I'm not your friend
I am something that you'll never comprehend
I Would Die 4 U - Prince (I always sanitize Prince's lyrics for textspeak, but that's only to avoid giving the artist away... so anything goes on the titles.)

2. Goodbye Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks (I had to laugh when I noticed in the 2008 version of this game that I commented on finally not using the obscure Goodbye Emil line for this song. Yes, I hosted three pre-LSWE LS series... one each year from 2002-04)

3. Is there any just cause for feeling like this
On the surface I'm a name on a list
I try to be discreet, but then blow it again
I Just Died In Your Arms - Cutting Crew (Fuck the parentheses!)

4. What does it matter to ya?
When you gotta job to do
You gotta do it well
You gotta give the other fellow hell
Live And Let Die - Sir Paul and Wings (I resisted the urge to ding anyone who put Guns N Roses here. What an awful, awful band they turned into after Appetite For Destruction...)

5. I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style.
And so I came to see him to listen for a while.
And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes
Killing Me Softly With His Song - Roberta Flack (And The Fugees, who I somehow completely forgot about while copying this game. My radio station quit playing it a few years ago and I guess that was enough to sweep it out of my mind...)

6. Here I go,
Hey Hey!
Here comes the devil,
Right Behind.
When I Die - Blood Sweat and Tears

7. The street was deserted late Friday night
We were buggin' each other while we sat out the light
We both popped the clutch when the light turned green
You shoulda heard the whine from my screamin' machine
Dead Man's Curve - Jan and Dean (Not the Beach Boys or Todd Rundgren [that's an old school Bored joke]...)

8. Look at him working, darning his socks
in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care
Eleanor Rigby - Beatles

9. Well, when I woke up, the rain was pourin' down.
There were people standing all around.
Something warm running in my eyes,
but I found my baby somehow that night
Last Kiss - J Frank Wilson (Did anyone mention Pearl Jam? I guess I'll find out when I do the JJC points...)

10. Crossin' the highway late last night,
He shoulda looked left and he shoulda looked right,
He didn't see the station wagon, car
Dead Skunk - Loudon Wainwright III (This was the song I added to replace Don't Fear the Reaper...)

11. If you believe in forever,
Then life is just a one-night stand.
Rock and Roll Heaven - Righteous Brothers

12. You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense
The Living Years - Mike & the Mechanics

Super easy theme? - Death!

Image Bonus: If you know the super easy theme, show me a fitting image. - I thought this would be an interesting theme for the IB, but it turned out kinda meh. So I'll award the IBB to the one that got the biggest laugh from me when I first saw it... Krox's. Congrats on being the first multiple IBB winner of the 2019 LSWE!

NO TASTE!!!??? He invoked the theme, classic literature that still inspires print, movie, and television media more than a CENTURY after it was first published, classic television that still inspires print, movie, and television media more than HALF A CENTURY after it first aired, and a classic quotation that echoes throughout print and social media. And it was funny.

No taste. Harumph!
