Former Rep. Tom Davis (R Va.) put it pretty well: Donny “was playing AA ball against major leaguers.” Unfortunately, that’s also the story of his foreign policy. —Bob

The difference is that in the shutdown negotiations, he was playing against people who have the best interest of the American public at heart. In foreign affairs, that's often not the case.

Nancy P does not have the best interest of the public at heart. Not the public they are representing. Otherwise a wall at the border would be a non-issue.

A clear majority of the American people disagree with you. Including absolutely every Member of the House who represents an inch of land along the southern border. Judging by recent election results, so does a majority of the electorate in your very own Congressional District. If you can’t make the case to your own neighbors, I don’t see how you can expect the rest of us to buy what you’re peddling.

And for good reason. A wall in the middle of a desert is stupid and a waste of money. It makes border security harder. —Bob

That comment right there shows you do not think through what your hearing from your side of the debate.

I have had to say this repeatedly to various people for the past month:

The "Government" was not shut down or closed. Something like 75% of the government was funded. Granted, some important aspects of the Government were not funded, and that lack of funding affected the efficiency of the funded portion. For example, it is hard to work on pending litigation when DOJ is unfunded and courts are constantly warning that they will close to non-criminal work.

In the next three weeks, maybe we will get lucky, and real leaders from each party will stop using the remaining budgets/appropriations as a zero sum game. Cut the President, Nancy, and Chuck out, and see how quick progress is made.

The only "silver lining" from the shutdown and all of the concern for federal workers is maybe we will see pay raises this year to help offset the pay gap.

This shutdown was not two-sided. It belongs to the guy who had this exact deal on the table 35 days ago and got stampeded by the radical right into changing his mind. And it belongs to the Republican Senators who passed it unanimously and then changed their mind when Donny changed his.

Speaker Pelosi’s caucus just won an election in which Donny made the wall a major issue. It is absolutely appropriate for them to honor the preferences of the voters who just elected them by standing firm against a wall that would be an utter waste of money (something that Republicans claimed to care passionately about as recently as the Obama Administration, though their subsequent conduct has proven their concern was a lie).

Donny is finally having his vaunted deal-making skills put to the test in domestic policy. And they’re failing just as miserably as they’re failing in foreign policy. The only thing he knows how to do is act as a bully from a position of overwhelming strength. When he doesn’t have that position, he’s got nothing. —Bob
