Republican Congressman from North Carolina who was best remembered for having the name of the French fries in the Congressional cafeteria changed to "freedom fries" during the Iraq war. Jones broke his hip in a fall last month and his health rapidly declined after that (the same thing happened to my mother).

Age 76

There are now two districts in North Carolina without Congressional representation. Jones's third district is coastal and largely rural from the Outer Banks to the Virginia border. The next hearing in the ninth district will be next week, and a new law passed after the November election will require a new primary to be held in that district if the state Election Board orders a new election as is likely. Complicating matters in both districts is the fact that the case involving gerrymandering of North Carolina Congressional districts is before the US Supreme Court and may be decided around the time that these special elections take place. A Supreme Court decision upholding the lower court ruling would require the state to redraw its Congressional districts again but would not affect the outcome of either special election.
