Here's a message from Alex:

Stage 4 cancer is usually fatal within a year. I hope Alex can beat this!

That's really sad news for Alex, his family, and the show. He always carries himself with such class and dignity, and I'm sure that he'll continue to do so for as long as he continues to associate with the show.

Practically, the timing is good; they have finished taping for this season, and have a few months to see where things go before starting next season.

The first time I switched law firms, the head of the Litigation Department, the guy who hired me, started to feel some discomfort while he was playing tennis. He thought he'd pulled a muscle. It turned out to be pancreatic cancer.

As usual with pancreatic cancer (and the reason it's such a bear), by the time the disease became symptomatic, there really wasn't much they could do for him other than make his last days comfortable. He was dead within a couple of months. So although I join Alex's many fans in wishing him the best, I'm very much afraid that this will be his last season as the host of Jeopardy!. --Bob

After losing 2 of the ushers in my wedding as young ages to pancreatic cancer this essay has always stuck with me.

<<<"Years ago, Charlie, a highly respected orthopedist and a mentor of mine, found a lump in his stomach. He had a surgeon explore the area, and the diagnosis was pancreatic cancer.........He went home the next day, closed his practice, and never set foot in a hospital again. He focused on spending time with family and feeling as good as possible. Several months later, he died at home. He got no chemotherapy, radiation, or surgical treatment. "<<<<<<

That would be an absolutely fabulous category.

Alex has some taping days left for this season. I wish him well. I saw him in person once at a taping in NYC, every break he willingly answered audience questions, very classy thing to do. Other games shows I have attended, I never saw the host do that.

I agree. When I was on J! in 2002, he was very classy, very professional but very open and friendly to the audience. Obviously he had to maintain a bit of professional distance from the contestants, but never made anyone feel less than comfortable.

In a new interview, Alex announces that he's getting chemotherapy again, with often painful side effects. But he refuses to slack off from hosting Jeopardy!

In brighter cancer news, Rod Stewart (who's just five years younger than Alex) has survived prostate cancer after three years of treatment.

Trebek Reaches 1-year Mark in Cancer Fight With Hope, Candor
Alex Trebek marked his one-year battle against pancreatic cancer with candor about how hard it’s been and a vow to keep going.

“I’d be lying if I said the journey had been an easy one. There have been some good days, but a lot of not-so-good days,” the longtime “Jeopardy!” host said in a video message posted online Wednesday. He’s joked with friends that “the cancer won’t kill me, the chemo treatments will,” Trebek said.
