Despite this article, there are plenty of opportunities on virtually every Caribbean cruise to experience the real islands. The trick is to either be adventurous and wander out yourself or to do some research in advance about the best ways to go about it. Mrs. SSS and I went off the beaten path on a number of our cruises.

I've never been to Coco Cay, but we've stopped on Carnival's private island in the Bahamas, Half Moon Cay and I'm sure they're pretty similar. There are over 700 islands in the Bahamas so there are plenty that are deserted or nearly so. The only people living on these are a handful of caretaker types that tend things between cruise ship dockings. Yes, turning this into a water park is tacky, but there wasn't anything there before except a deserted island. Some of them actually have structures on them that were built during Prohibition. The ships from Europe would stop at an island like this and unload and sell to the bootleggers who would then take the booze the rest of the way into Florida.
