Doris Day, actress and media personality, has died at the age of 97.

Doris Day was the butt of a lot of jokes when I was growing up, because her style of suggestive comedy was becoming outdated, because her sunny personality was easy to make fun of in the cynical 60s, and because her later movies weren't exactly masterpieces. But as I got older, I was able to appreciate how good she was as a singer and could be as an actress.

This reminds me of a 50s horror movie called I Bury the Living with Richard Boone. He played the owner or manager of a cemetery, and they had a map with all the plots that had white pins for people who owned the plot but were still alive and black pins for occupied plots. Then somebody started replacing the white pins with black pins and the owners started dying. And Boone wondered what would happen if he replaced some of the black pins with white ones. (This ending of this one turns out to be rather surprising.)

I'll really begin to worry if some of Vandal's D's wind up becoming A.

She rubbed a bit more than elbows with Mickey Mantle, and also with Maury Wills of the LA Dodgers.

Her movie that I most enjoy remembering is The Glass Bottom Boat. I don't know why. I guess the age I was, the time it was, but that movie has a large spot in my heart.

I don't think I want to watch it again as it might spoil the memory.

A few years after that, Rod Taylor co-starred in The Train Robbers with John Wayne, and Wayne supposedly told Taylor that the actress he most regretted not making a film with was Doris Day.

Within the week, there will be a Man Who Knew Too Much/Love Me or Leave Me/Young Man with a Horn triple bill at Casa Melly/Boonie.

Thanks to TLAF, I was a big fan of Doris Day's recording career. As Frank pointed out, it was fashionable to take Doris lightly but that voice was sublime.

She was an incredible performer, and she was a real hero to animals too. I hope the Doris Day Animal Foundation continues.

I loved her performances. She always seemed to me to hit the right notes. I shouldn't have looked up the real story of Young Man with a Horn. Watching the movie, it appeared certain that Doris's character would redeem Kirk Douglas's character.

I can watch Calamity Jane over and over. I wish she had played Annie in Annie Get Your Gun.
