I'm a little baffled by the NPR headline.

Nonetheless, author Herman Wouk has died at the age of 103.

Is it comforting that we're reporting the passing of so many people over 100 years old?

His Winds of War/War and Remembrance are great long-form historical fiction. I've never read The Caine Mutiny, but it's one of my all-time favorite films.

Especially if you take bathroom breaks during the love scenes. God, are those the two worst actors ever or what?

Folks who liked his historical fiction might also dig W.E.B. Griffin, who has several series. My favorite is The Brotherhood of War, several books about soldiers during several wars. The first one is The Lieutenants.

He is not as flowery as Wouk but that's mostly a good thing.
