Since you reject anything you don't like as fake news or leftist propaganda, that's a pretty difficult task.

It also explains how that hardcore 30% or so Trump support never goes down.

Convince me I'm wrong, polly, instead of worrying where I get my opinions from. Trump had to threaten Mexico with tariffs in order to get SOMETHING done about the thousands of illegals coming through our border every month. And apparently it worked.

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-t ... d=63569618

Why did he have to do this? Because CONGRESS WILL NOT DO IT'S JOB!!! They're all over the MSM complaining, warning, worrying and speculating about the tariffs. But why doesn't just ONE enterprising journalist ask them "Why are you complaining about the possibility of tariffs, when making the immigration laws is your job? Why don't you fix the 'broken' immigration system that you're always complaining about?"

But the MSM insists that everything that happens is trump's fault and you rarely, if ever, hear them call for Pelosi and Schumer to get off their asses and do something to stop the mass exodus. Do you, Polly? I don't. Instead, they are invited to Jimmy Kimmel or Colbert or whomever to have a schmooze session while they tell trump jokes.

My prediction: They'll find something wrong with this deal and they will ALL drum at it, using the same exact words.

The early returns on the Mexico/US deal look like a win for Trump, but in all honesty, aside from a change that they've come to an arrangement on handling asylum cases (Mexico agrees to house them, but they apply for asylum to the US...the US wanted them to have to apply to Mexico...the first country they crossed through...the Mexicans didn't want any part of them), Mexico was already doing much of what they promised to do here.

The only other thing is it's in writing now- but we have to wait and see what kind of enforcement mechanism is in place.

So it's a PR win for Trump, but not sure yet how much has changed on the ground.

Here's a link to the joint declaration for those to read who wish to.

Whatever, but I wish you would admit that at least he is doing what he can to try and fix the situation, which his critics have up until recently called a 'manufactured' crisis. You talk about the 'conservative' media with disdain, but do you ever ask yourself why the supposedly top notch MSM news outlets can be so tough on trump, but very rarely call the democrats on the carpet to anywhere near the degree that they do for trump when they pull obviously political shit like calling it a 'manufactured' crisis and are obviously wrong? Why do we not have a list of 3000 lies congress has told us? Why is it a PR triumph for trump, but not a black eye for congress, which hasn't lifted a damn finger to do anything about the crisis? They would rather hold the AG in contempt for obeying the laws they wrote.

But don't bother addressing any of these points and tell me where I'm wrong. Just do like polly and tell me I got these ridiculous ideas from hannity and then take a personal swipe at me.

The "crisis" is manufactured in the sense that it's been caused by Trump's policies. There weren't all these people in camps at the border before Trump started this whole mess.

And while you and Trump are patting yourselves on the back, what's really happened beyond the puff piece language drafted by the State Department is that Mexico is agreeing to take back refugees seeking asylum until the US acts on their applications, which the US says it will expedite. That's an improvement because they are much more likely to receive humane treatment in Mexico than in the US, which is a fine commentary on the Trump policies. What Trump wanted and didn't get was a commitment from Mexico to handle all asylum requests from Central American countries. As usual, Trump takes credit for a great victory that doesn't amount to much when you actually look at it. (It appears as if it's the US that backed down from its initial demands when Republicans in Congress indicated they wouldn't sign on to tariffs, and Mexico just agreed to some nice-sounding fluff.)

And the entire Trump policy regarding the handling of asylum seekers is tied up in courts currently.

But he's doing something. It's something utterly ineffective and illegal, and it seems to have made the situation worse rather than better, but he's doing something. --Bob

That's the most mature and reasoned statement you've ever made on this bored. Shows the level of response you have when you don't use the batphone.
If I want your opinion all I have to do is link to any one of the many websites that have immediate responses to any action, words spoken or tweets by trump. They have paid resources standing by to supply you with your opinions. Makes it so easy for you.
In the meantime, facebook, twitter and social media continue to censor any voices they don't like. No rules apply to this censorship.

What's the batphone's answer to why congress is doing nothing about our border problem, bob-tel?

The problem that we're at risk of not attracting enough immigrants across our borders to fill out our work force, so that jobs will go unfilled and Social Security benefits will go unpaid for lack of enough workers to fund currently due payments? The reason for that is obvious. The Republican Party has been demonizing immigrants.

Eventually that will result in the Republican Party withering away as it has in California, but that could take another 20 years. Maybe more, given the structural inequities in the design of our Constitution that give rural areas outsized political influence. In the short run an awful lot of immigrants that we'd really like to attract to America are considering other options instead. The only thing I can think to do about that problem is to continue to remove Republicans from office, one election at a time. --Bob

Bob-tel. What's the difference between immigrants and illegal immigrants? Do you know? Do you even care? Do you even think about it other than in political terms?
I can tell that's a batphone response because it doesn't make that obvious distinction.
Congress has the power to make that distinction and ensure we have enough LEGAL immigration to supply our needs. Again I ask: Why are they not doing anything?

Flock, I've found someone who shared your feelings about Trump:
James "Whitey" Bulger, the ruthless Boston gangster who was killed in prison last year, praised President Donald Trump regularly in handwritten letters he wrote from prison and railed against former special counsel Robert Mueller. ...[NBC] reported that Bulger defended Trump's approach to foreign policy and took the president's side in his combative relationship with the media.

"History may show Trump was the man of the hour," NBC reported Bulger wrote in one letter in August 2018. "Feel China respects him and hesitant to try to bully him." That same month, Bulger wrote: "Trump is tough and fights back instead of bowing down to pressure — and caving in to press! U.S. agrees with him press attacking and his reaction increases his popularity — He has my vote so far."

"Trump is experiencing what Mueller and company can orchestrate," Bulger said in a separate letter last September, according to NBC. "(Mueller) should observe biblical saying – 'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.'"
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nat ... 393394001/

Great minds think alike. Too bad Bulger died (and was convicted of murder) before he had the chance to vote for Trump in 2020.

NY Times reporting that Mexico had already agreed to everything Trump supposedly said they agreed to last night back in negotiations with Nielsen back in March.

And that the only holdup in implementing was getting final legislative approval for the National Guard to be formed.

Was this yet another case of Trump creating a brouhaha with his tariff threat, and in the face of Republican opposition, hooking onto things already agreed by Mexico as a face-saving way of not implementing them?

Will need to find more information, but this new story is...interesting.

bob-tel, I am not a republican, but I know republicans. Republicans have never demonized immigrants, either the legal or illegal variety. What has happened is the democrat party has made it their mission to demonize republicans, and accusing them of demonizing immigrants is part of their propaganda, which you have swallowed hook line and sinker. It's one of the rules for radicals.

What republicans and independents like me want is for our government to manage who is in our country. Why do we have immigration laws and a border patrol if not for that purpose, bob-tel? It is one of the things that our federal government is SUPPOSED to do. And congress, both parties, have refused to do anything about it. Democrats because they believe they are allowing in more democrat voters, and republicans because a certain powerful part of their base wants the cheap labor. At least that is my OPINION, and it's a lot more likely to be true than yours.

And for that matter, You say we are not attracting ENOUGH? (based on your definition of immigrants). Maybe you are not paying attention, but there are record numbers of people crossing our borders illegally. They come here coached on how to scam the system. And as far as I can see, based on actual video and reports, it IS an invasion. Why, bob-tel, why do you think won't congress do anything? And why aren't you outraged about it?

I'm sorry Jeemie, but I don't take anything the NYT says as gospel, based on their recent history. Was this from an 'Unnamed source who is familiar with the situation', like all their stories about how Rosenstein and Mueller's firings were imminent?

Why do you care? Seriously. People break the law all the time. Even federal law. I don't see you up in arms about people who are speeding. I don't see you up in arms about people who use marijuana, which remains a Schedule 1 drug under federal law.

So what if a lot of immigrants are crossing the border? (They're not, by the way. They're mostly coming across legally, usually by air, and overstaying their visas.) How are they making your life worse?

You're arguing this as though the mere fact that their presence is unauthorized is the end of the discussion. It's not. It's the beginning. I'm fine with them being here. They make my life better, some personally and some more generally. I wish more would arrive so that I could be confident that there will be enough workers to pay my social security benefits when it comes time for me to collect them. How does their presence hurt you? --Bob

BTW the foreign minister of Mexico confirmed there was no secret agreement reached this weekend, so Trump needing a face-saving way to back down from his tariff threat is seeming more and more likely.

Why? No deal, a tariff. It's a good move. Mexico is a huge part of the problem and can fix a lot of it, easily.
