The body of an Indian magician who called himself Wizard Mandrake was found in the Hooghly River following his attempt to duplicate one of Houdini's escape feats. Mandrake was tied with ropes and steel chains and lowered into the river, whereupon he disappeared after telling the crowd, "If I can open it up, then it will be magic, but if I can't, it will be tragic." It proved to be tragic. The found his body the next day a couple of kilometers downriver. He had never done this particular stunt before, although he claimed to have done a similar river escape a few years earlier.
