RIP, Tyler Skaggs

This one is a real shocker. Skaggs was a starting pitcher with the Los Angeles Angels who pitched in Saturday night's game against Oakland. He was found dead in his hotel room in Texas, where the Angels were scheduled to play tonight (that game has been postponed). There is no evidence of foul play, but there will undoubtedly be further investigation into the cause of death.

Age 27.

Very reminiscent of Darryl Kile's shocking death back in 2002. I know he was about to turn 28 because we share a birthday...

Wiki says he was 33 when he died (born in 68).

Almost this same thing happened to the Angels ten years ago. Another pitcher, Nick Adenhart, died during the 2009 season. He was killed in a traffic accident later the same night that he was the starting pitcher in a game. Adenhart was even younger than Skaggs.

I wonder if I'm the only one who continues to be shocked that Adenhart's death was ten years ago. It feels like yesterday. --Bob

Last night, the Angels played their first home game since Skaggs's death, and they had a lengthy tribute to him before the game. Then the game itself turned into one of those hard-to-believe events. Two Angels pitchers combined do pitch a no-hitter against Seattle as the Angels won 13-0, scoring seven runs in the first inning. Relief pitcher Taylor Cole started the game as an "opener" (a term used for a relief pitcher who starts a game with the intent of pitching only a couple of innings, allowing other relievers to pitch the rest of the game). Felix Pena pitched the final seven innings and got credit for the win.

As part of the tribute, each of the Angels wore jerseys bearing Skaggs's name and number throughout the game. When the game ended, they each laid out their "45 Skaggs" jersey on the pitcher's mound. Even just watching the highlights show I found it quite moving. --Bob

As I feared, the cause of death has been ruled an accidental drug overdose. They found fentanyl, oxycodone and oxymorphone, along with booze in his system. Not a good combination.

To be more precise, the medical examiner found that he choked on his own vomit while under the influence. --Bob

Eric Kay, former communications director of the Los Angeles Angels, has been convicted in Texas federal court on charges of distribution of controlled substances (fentanly) resulting in the death of Tyler Skaggs and conspiracy to possess controlled substances with intent to distribute. Skaggs died in Texas, where the Angels were playing the Rangers. The charges carry a minimum 20 year sentence. Kay was immediately taken into custody.
